Commemoration of Africa Day 2024 in New York: Year of Education

On May 31, 2024, the United Nations headquarters in New York City buzzed with vibrant energy and celebration as it hosted the grand commemoration of Africa Day. The event, jointly orchestrated by the African Union Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the UN African Ambassadors Spouses Group (UNAASG), and the African General Consulates in NY, stood as a testament to the continent’s progress and potential under the inspiring AU  theme for 2024: “Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building Resilient Education Systems for Increased Access to Inclusive, Lifelong, Quality, and Relevant Learning in Africa.”

The Commemoration began with serene melodies of kora music, performed by the talented Yacouba Sissoko, filling the air, setting a culturally rich and inviting atmosphere. The ceremony officially commenced with Welcoming remarks by H.E. Amb. Fatima Kyari Mohammed who underscored the unity and shared vision of the African continent. It was followed by an inspiring Africa Day message from H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission. Their words highlighted the critical importance of resilient and inclusive education systems in shaping Africa’s future.

A series of impactful opening remarks ensued. H.E. Mr. Zéphyrin Maniratanga , Permanent Representative of Burundi to the UN and Chair of the African Group for the month of May,emphasized the significance of the day and the month-long celebration, while H.E. Mr. Abdelkader Jamoussi, Consul General of Morocco in New York, and Chair of the African Consulates in NY, shared their insights and support for the initiative.

Goodwill message was conveyed by H.E. Mr. Dennis Francis, President of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly,  who reinforced the global solidarity and commitment towards advancing education in Africa. The segment concluded with a group photo of all dignitaries, capturing the momentous occasion.

The evening unfolded with guests being invited to explore Africa’s rich cultural diversity through various regional cuisine and cultural stands. Guests also had the opportunity to visit a book exhibition aligned with the AU’s 2024 theme on education. This interactive and immersive experience allowed guests to delve into the heart of Africa’s diverse cultures, traditions, and educational aspirations.

The evening was marked by a series of captivating and mesmerizing performances with artists from Morocco and Burkina Faso enthralling  the audience with their dynamic acts, leaving the audience spellbound and deeply moved.

Africa Day 2024 at the United Nations headquarters was not just an event; it was a remarkable celebration of Africa’s past, present, and future. Through powerful speeches, cultural showcases, and a shared vision for educational advancement, the AU Mission to the United Nations successfully highlighted the continent’s immense potential and the pivotal role of education in achieving ” The Africa we want.” The event underscored the importance of international collaboration and solidarity in driving sustainable development and progress across the continent.
