The Second Annual Experience Africa Conference, in partnership with the Georgetown Africa Business Alliance, was a spectacular showcase of African excellence, held at Georgetown University’s Rafik B. Hariri Building on Saturday, October 5th. This year’s event brought together some of the brightest minds and most influential voices from across Africa and the diaspora, offering attendees a day filled with insightful discussions, cultural experiences, and vibrant networking opportunities.

 

Opening with Inspiration: Dr. Eleni Gabre-Madhin’s Welcome Note

The event began with a powerful and uplifting welcome address by Dr. Eleni Gabre-Madhin, Executive-in-Residence at the McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University. A trailblazing economist and entrepreneur, Dr. Gabre-Madhin highlighted the importance of leveraging Africa’s unique strengths and emphasized the theme of unity, innovation, and progress for the continent’s future.

Keynote Addresses: Leadership and Media’s Role in Shaping Africa

The keynote speeches featured two extraordinary individuals who captivated the audience. Kimberly A. Bassett, Secretary of the District of Columbia, delivered a moving address on the importance of international collaboration, emphasizing Africa’s growing global presence. Following her, Ambassador Edward Boateng, Former Ghanaian Ambassador to China and Founder & Executive Chairman of Global Media Alliance, shared insights into his diplomatic career and discussed the pivotal role African media can play in reshaping the continent’s narrative.

Panel 1: A Thriving Africa – African Change-Makers Impacting the Continent through Media

The first panel discussion, titled “A Thriving Africa: African Change-Makers Impacting the Continent through Media”, featured dynamic leaders shaping the media landscape across Africa. Ambassador Boateng, Banky W. (renowned musician and filmmaker), and Manish Phair (Advisor and Investor) engaged in a lively conversation about the power of media and entertainment in creating economic opportunities and fostering entrepreneurship. The panelists explored how storytelling and creative industries are key to Africa’s future growth.

Panel 2: Journeys of Transformation – Leveraging U.S. Education and Careers for Africa’s Future

The second panel, “Journeys of Transformation: Leveraging U.S. Education and Careers for Africa’s Future,” featured some of the most inspiring African professionals who have harnessed their U.S. education to drive impactful careers. Anthony Attipoe, Nyuma Harrison, Phillip Njowusi, and Sadibou Sylla shared their journeys of perseverance and success, shedding light on how education and experience abroad can contribute to Africa’s future development.

Global Marketplace: A Hub of African Excellence

The Global Marketplace at the Georgetown Experience Africa Conference 2024 was a lively and colorful showcase of African excellence, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit. Visitors explored unique merchandise from vendors like Ezigbo Ankara, MDStyle Closet, Omnile, African Treasures, and Inside My Hut, each offering stunning African-inspired clothing, crafts, and accessories. Fanny’s House, the featured fashion designer for the event, captivated the audience with their exceptional collection.

Attendees also enjoyed a variety of delicious food offerings from Fatesia Bakery & Cuisine, Palisades, and Princes Catering, bringing the authentic flavors of East Africa and beyond. Informational booths from Tour Motherland, Fathers Haven Foundation, Zulunomics, TIVA, RND Associates, Achievers Dream Tea, TVOA, and TUC offered insights into African initiatives and development projects. Arts and crafts vendors like Owoblo Arts and Omozee added an artistic flair, while the embassies of Angola and Madagascar showcased their countries’ contributions to the event. The marketplace was a vibrant melting pot of culture, innovation, and opportunity, reflecting the dynamic growth and potential of Africa.

Comedy & Fashion: A Cultural Extravaganza

The day’s excitement didn’t stop with discussions—attendees were treated to a lively comedy performance by Benny Nwokeabia, a Nigerian/Ethiopian comedian whose humor added a delightful touch to the event.

The fashion show, powered by NVE Agency, was a highlight, showcasing stunning collections from Fanny’s House, Betsy, and Adom Clothing. The designs celebrated African tradition with modern flair, dazzling the audience and underscoring Africa’s global influence in fashion.

Moderators: Ziyanda Mtshontshi & Michelle Juma

The event was expertly moderated by Ziyanda S. Mtshontshi, Co-founder of Ubuntu Inclusive Centre, and Michelle Juma, Co-President of the Georgetown Black MBA Association. Their energy and seamless coordination as co-MCs ensured that the event flowed smoothly, keeping the audience engaged and the discussions impactful.

Closing Remarks:

The day concluded with heartfelt closing remarks from Kadmiel Van Der Puije and Kemuel Van Der Puije, who emphasized the importance of community, collaboration, and the continued rise of Africa on the global stage. Joined by the Georgetown Africa Business Alliance Team, including Denzil Mutsikiwa and Jessica Echegile, the closing remarks left attendees inspired and excited for the future.
