On October 11, 2024, at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, Ziyanda S. Mtshontshi, MSc, co-founder of Ubuntu Impact Health and Ubuntu Inclusive Foundation, delivered an inspiring session on “The Importance of Personal Branding” at the prestigious Bunting Neighborhood Leadership Program. Moderated by Iheanyichukwu Samuel Onwubiko, a Business Development and Brand Management Specialist, this session offered participants invaluable insights into how personal branding can transform their professional lives and business goals.

Ziyanda emphasized the pivotal role personal branding plays in connecting authentically with one’s audience. She began by outlining the importance of having a consistent and genuine personal brand, explaining that this allows for deeper connections and the development of trust with both peers and potential business partners. “A consistent and authentic personal brand enables you to connect better with your audience,” Ziyanda stated. “People are drawn to authenticity, and when they see that you remain true to your values, they are more likely to engage with your brand and seek out ways to work with you.”

One of the most powerful points Ziyanda made was the concept of becoming a virtual mentor through personal branding. By cultivating an impactful personal brand, professionals can inspire others, even those they have never met in person. “You can become a virtual mentor to other professionals and individuals who align with your brand,” Ziyanda explained, highlighting the mentorship value that an online presence can create.

A key focus of Ziyanda’s presentation was LinkedIn as a platform for personal branding. She explained how building a strong and reliable brand on LinkedIn can open doors to new professional relationships. “A well-crafted personal brand on LinkedIn allows you to approach professional mentors, investors, and potential business partners with confidence,” she noted. Ziyanda encouraged business owners to understand that their personal brand is not just a reflection of themselves but also a strategic asset for advancing their business goals and professional image.

Ziyanda introduced the idea of an online personal brand as a ‘silent networker’, advocating for individuals in spaces where they are not present. “It leaves a lasting impression on people who may not have interacted with you enough or at all,” she said, “and it advocates for you in decision-making spaces, positioning you as a credible and trustworthy figure.”

During the Q&A segment, Ziyanda was asked, “When posting, how often do you use graphics?” She responded thoughtfully: “Graphics depend on the type of content you post. Personally, I’ve found that pairing every written post with a graphic captivates readers and invites them to engage with your post more. The visual element draws attention, but it’s essential that the graphics complement the message.”

Another attendee asked Ziyanda about how she built her own personal brand. Ziyanda’s response was both practical and personal: “First and foremost, you must be aware of your values and who you are, irrespective of other personal brands. Then, choose a platform that best suits you and your expression.” She elaborated that as a young academic with entrepreneurial ambitions, LinkedIn was her platform of choice. “It worked perfectly for me because it aligned with my professional goals and allowed me to network with like-minded individuals.” She stressed the importance of consistency and authenticity, encouraging participants to “show up consistently and share your story, staying true to who you are.”

The session was a transformative experience for many attendees, providing them with actionable steps to refine their personal brands and take ownership of their professional journeys. Ziyanda’s wisdom about personal branding as a tool for success resonated deeply, offering a roadmap for participants to elevate their presence, influence, and opportunities in the digital age.

Through her impactful words, Ziyanda S. Mtshontshi reminded everyone that a personal brand is not just a reflection of the person but an evolving, strategic asset that can influence professional growth and business success. Her advice on consistency, authenticity, and value-driven storytelling provided invaluable lessons for anyone looking to build a meaningful, lasting presence in their industry.
