The football world has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Silva, in a car crash in Spain. The fatal accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning near Zamora, in northwestern Spain, just 10 days after Jota’s wedding to his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso.
Spanish authorities reported that the Lamborghini the two were travelling in veered off the Rias Bajas Highway (A-52) near Palacios de Sanabria at around 12.30am local time. Local police, the Guardia Civil, confirmed to news outlets that a tyre is believed to have burst while the vehicle was overtaking. The car caught fire shortly after the crash, killing both occupants instantly.
“Pending the completion of forensic tests, one of the deceased has been identified as Diogo Jota, a Liverpool FC player, and his brother, Andre Felipe,” the Guardia Civil said.
Jota, 28, had recently celebrated his marriage to Rute and was the father of three young children. His brother André, 26, played professionally for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
Liverpool FC issued a heartfelt statement expressing deep sorrow. “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. We will make no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss,” the statement read.
The Portuguese Football Federation also expressed profound grief. In a statement carried by multiple outlets, including CNN and Sky Sports, the federation said,
“Far beyond being an exceptional player, with nearly 50 caps for the national team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference within his own community. We have lost two champions.”
Jota’s football journey began at Paços de Ferreira before a move to Atlético Madrid. Loan spells at Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers followed, with his standout performances at Wolves earning him a transfer to Liverpool in 2020. Over his five seasons at Anfield, Jota played 123 matches and scored 47 goals, playing a pivotal role in Liverpool’s Premier League-winning season. He also helped the club win the FA Cup and League Cup.
Internationally, Jota earned 49 caps for Portugal and scored 14 goals. He was part of the squads that lifted the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and again in 2025.
Beyond the pitch, Jota was known for his passion for gaming. An avid video gamer and Twitch streamer, he also owned an eSports team, further connecting him with fans off the field.
The tragedy has shaken both the football and gaming communities. Messages of condolence have poured in from clubs, teammates, fans and public figures across Europe and beyond. For many, the loss is not just of a talented footballer but of a vibrant personality who brought joy both on and off the field.
As investigations into the crash continue, the global football family mourns a life cut short too soon. Diogo Jota’s legacy, marked by passion, skill and humility, will live on in the hearts of many who watched him play and admired the person he was.
