The United Nations marked its 80th anniversary on Monday with a solemn yet hopeful ceremony at its New York headquarters. World leaders gathered in the General Assembly Hall, transformed into a chamber of blue light and music, to honour the founding of an organisation born out of the devastation of two world wars.

General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock reminded delegates that the UN was established at a time when the scars of conflict and the horrors of the Holocaust were still raw, and when more than 70 territories remained under colonial rule. The signing of the UN Charter in June 1945, she said, was not simply a diplomatic agreement but a solemn promise to prevent the repetition of humanity’s darkest chapters.

Yet Ms Baerbock struck a note of urgency, warning that the world once again stands at a crossroads. With conflict raging in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan and Haiti, and with the spread of hatred online, she insisted that the path of unity and cooperation must be chosen over despair. “We cannot take the easy path and simply give up. We have to choose the right path; to show the world that we can be better together,” she said.

Secretary-General António Guterres also invoked the early days of the UN, recalling how the organisation’s first delegates and staff members carried physical and emotional wounds from war. These were not dreamers, he stressed, but realists who understood that peace was both courageous and essential. He described the UN as “something extraordinary, a place where all nations – large and small – could come together to solve problems that no country can solve alone.”

However, Mr Guterres issued a stark warning that the principles of the UN are under assault as never before. Civilians are being targeted, international law disregarded, and humanitarian crises worsening. Meanwhile, progress on the Sustainable Development Goals is faltering, poverty and hunger are rising, and the climate crisis is intensifying. He urged the international community to meet these challenges with “clarity, courage and conviction” and to recommit to the promise of peace.

High-level Week: Spotlight on Women’s Empowerment

The milestone celebration also marked the beginning of the UN’s annual high-level week, which opened with an event dedicated to women’s empowerment. Only the fifth woman to preside over the General Assembly, Ms Baerbock paid tribute to the women who fought tirelessly for the Beijing Declaration, adopted 30 years ago. The declaration remains a landmark blueprint for advancing women’s rights.

Reflecting on progress since the 1995 Beijing Conference, Ms Baerbock noted that positions of power once unimaginable for women have now become attainable, inspiring younger generations. Echoing Hillary Clinton’s famous words in Beijing, she reaffirmed that “women’s rights are human rights”.

Mr Guterres described the Beijing Declaration as the most ambitious global political commitment on women’s rights ever made, pointing to advances in legal protections, education, and political participation for women across the world. UN Women’s Executive Director Sima Bahous highlighted concrete gains, noting that girls are more likely to complete their education today than at any time in history, the number of women in parliaments has nearly doubled, and close to 100 discriminatory laws have been repealed in the past five years.

“Every step forward proved the same truth: gender equality works,” Ms Bahous said, while cautioning that progress remains far too slow.

The dual commemorations, of 80 years of the UN and 30 years of the Beijing Declaration, underscored the intertwined struggles for peace and equality. Both serve as reminders that while humanity has come far, it must continue to summon courage and unity to build a better future.
