Washington, D.C. | October 29, 2025 — In an era where collaboration defines progress, three Southern African nations — Zambia, Malawi, and Zimbabwe — came together at the Embassy of the Republic of Zambia in Washington, D.C. for a groundbreaking Interactive Destination Training that reimagined Africa’s place in global tourism.

The event attracted 15 top U.S. tourism agents and partners from Washington, New York, Atlanta, and Chicago, underscoring the growing demand among American travelers for authentic, multi-destination experiences across Africa.

Presiding over the event were Ambassador Chibamba Kanyama and Deputy Chief of Mission, Ms. Demetria Lubinga, who welcomed guests with warmth and vision. Ambassador Kanyama emphasized the importance of regional unity in shaping Africa’s tourism narrative, highlighting how travelers increasingly visit multiple Southern African destinations in one journey.

“This collaboration reflects Africa’s future — one built on partnership, proximity, and shared potential,” said Ambassador Kanyama. “U.S. travelers are not just visiting Zambia — they’re exploring Zimbabwe, relaxing in Malawi, and discovering the beauty that binds us.”

Ethiopian Airlines: Africa’s Bridge to the World

The event’s global dimension was strengthened by the participation of Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest and most connected carrier. Representing the airline was Kathy Hill, Account Manager for Ethiopian Airlines USA, who delivered a captivating presentation to the audience of tourism agents.

Kathy outlined the airline’s unparalleled connectivity between the United States and Africa — with direct routes to Lusaka, Harare, and Lilongwe — enabling seamless multi-country itineraries for travelers eager to explore the continent’s treasures.

“Ethiopian Airlines doesn’t just fly people,” Kathy shared. “We connect cultures, economies, and dreams — opening the world to Africa, and Africa to the world.”

Her remarks drew applause from travel professionals who praised Ethiopian Airlines for its consistent role in making Africa accessible, affordable, and aspirational.

Three Nations, Three Voices, One Vision

The heart of the event belonged to three exceptional diplomats whose passion for Africa’s growth radiated through every word:

Angela C. Chimpinde — Zambia

Angela Chikumbi Chimpinde

Poised and articulate, Angela championed Zambia’s vision for sustainable tourism, highlighting its incredible landscapes — from Victoria Falls to the Luangwa Valley — and its commitment to conservation-driven travel.

“Tourism is diplomacy in motion,” Angela said. “Every traveler we welcome becomes an ambassador for Africa’s beauty, its people, and its potential.”

Her presentation showcased Zambia’s balance between wildlife preservation and cultural tourism, leaving agents eager to add Zambia to their premium travel portfolios.

Miriam Gwalidi — Malawi

With eloquence and charm, Miriam captured the spirit of The Warm Heart of Africa. She spoke passionately about Malawi’s emerging creative and eco-tourism industries, community-based lodges, and artistic expressions shaping a new narrative for the nation.

“Malawi may be small, but its heart is vast,” she noted. “Our culture, our lakes, and our people reflect the soul of Africa — peaceful, welcoming, and alive with promise.”

Her authenticity resonated deeply, earning admiration from U.S. agents who praised Malawi’s untapped potential as a tranquil luxury destination.

Ropafadzo Dunira — Zimbabwe

Left to Right: Ropafadzo Dunira (Minister Counsellor for Tourism, Embassy of Zimbabwe), Miriam Gwalidi (Second Secretary for Tourism and Communications, Embassy of Malawi), and Angela C. Chimpinde (First Secretary for Tourism, Embassy of Zambia)

Ropafadzo commanded the room with her confidence and cultural pride. She spoke about Zimbabwe’s renaissance in tourism — from the breathtaking Victoria Falls to its vibrant heritage festivals — and how the country’s resilience continues to inspire the world.

“Zimbabwe is not just open for tourism,” she said. “We are open for inspiration. Our people, our culture, our stories — they are the heartbeat of Africa.”

Her delivery was powerful — a blend of diplomacy, storytelling, and authenticity that positioned her as one of Africa’s emerging leaders in global tourism.

Unity Beyond Borders

The event was more than a tourism training; it was a statement of intent — a demonstration of how Africa’s nations can collaborate, not compete, to attract the world’s attention. With Ethiopian Airlines as a strategic partner, the trio of Zambia, Malawi, and Zimbabwe showcased what’s possible when governments, embassies, and media unite with a shared purpose.

The collaboration aims to inspire joint tourism campaigns, media partnerships, and cross-border investment opportunities, marking a turning point for how Africa markets itself to the global travel industry.

“When we tell our story together,” said Ropafadzo, “we don’t just sell destinations — we sell the African dream.”

A Future Worth Investing In

As travel agents networked and exchanged ideas, one theme resonated: Africa’s tourism renaissance is female-led and future-driven.

Angela, Miriam, and Ropafadzo — each representing the new face of African diplomacy — demonstrated excellence that goes beyond duty. They are the kind of leaders who deserve more than applause; they deserve platforms, partnerships, and portfolios of investment from their home governments.

For Zambia, Malawi, and Zimbabwe, sponsoring collaborations with platforms like The Voice of Africa means global visibility — a chance to place Southern Africa’s story where it belongs: on the world stage.
