Tensions in West Africa have escalated again after the Alliance of Sahel States warned Nigeria that it will neutralise any aircraft entering its airspace without approval. The statement followed the emergency landing of a Nigerian military plane in western Burkina Faso carrying nine personnel. Authorities in Ouagadougou say the aircraft did not have clearance to enter the country and described the incident as unfriendly and a violation of international aviation standards.

Burkina Faso’s territorial administration minister delivered the warning on national television, saying the alliance has strengthened the security of its skies and will act against any unauthorised aircraft. The Sahel alliance, made up of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, has been redefining its political and security posture since withdrawing from ECOWAS earlier this year.

Nigeria says the aircraft incident must be viewed in a wider context. Abuja recently sent military planes to Benin during the attempted coup there, insisting the move was made at the request of the Beninese government and within ECOWAS frameworks. That intervention came at a time when West Africa is facing a widening divide, with trade suspended between ECOWAS and the Sahel bloc.

The region has witnessed multiple coups over the last three years, most recently in Guinea-Bissau. The Sahel alliance formally left ECOWAS after the bloc warned it was prepared to intervene militarily in Niger following the twenty twenty three coup.

This latest airspace dispute highlights how fragmented the region has become. It reflects a shifting balance of security alliances, rising mistrust and a struggle over who defines regional authority. For Africa’s young population and emerging economies, the real question remains whether regional blocs can rebuild cooperation at a time when instability is becoming increasingly interconnected.
