The political fallout from Benin’s failed coup attempt continues to widen, with Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri the alleged figurehead of the mutiny reportedly finding refuge across the border in Togo.
According to Beninese government officials who spoke to Reuters, Tigri and several others tied to the attempted takeover are believed to be hiding in Lomé 2, a neighbourhood in Togo’s capital. Jeune Afrique has reported the same location.
Tigri appeared on Benin’s state television on Sunday, flanked by seven soldiers who claimed they had removed President Patrice Talon from power. The celebratory mood lasted only a few hours. Benin’s armed forces quickly reclaimed control, supported by Nigerian troops and French logistical assistance, shutting down the short‑lived rebellion before it gained traction.
At least 14 individuals were arrested soon after, though Tigri managed to escape during the chaos. Benin has now formally requested Togolese authorities to extradite the fugitives. President Talon was blunt in his national address, describing the mutiny as “treachery” that “will not go unpunished.”
The episode has become yet another strain on West Africa’s already fragile political environment, following a string of coups and attempted coups across the region over the last five years. ECOWAS has struggled to deter these disruptions yet continues to push for regional cooperation, particularly between neighbours who now find themselves dealing with fugitives crossing borders.
This latest incident arrives just months before Benin heads into a pivotal election season. Talon is set to leave office next April, and his chosen successor, former Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, is widely viewed as the frontrunner. The opposition, already weakened after candidate Renaud Agbodjo was barred for insufficient sponsorships, now has an even narrower path in an environment defined by political tension.
As for Tigri, the alleged coup leader who briefly declared himself victorious on television, his reported escape to Togo creates a diplomatic test between two countries that share both borders and history. Benin wants him returned. Togo has yet to publicly say a word.
Still, as governments posture and soldiers hide across borders, the region keeps inching forward. West Africa is young, restless, ambitious and still learning the long, patient work of building institutions that others had centuries to refine. Even moments of disruption like this one remind us of a deeper truth: our story is still being written and there is far more ahead than behind.
This is The Voice of Africa’s reminder that despite turbulence, the continent’s path bends toward growth, stability and renewal.
