The Central African Republic is heading into a decisive moment as citizens prepare to vote on 28 December in presidential, legislative, local, and municipal elections. The vote represents one of the most wide‑ranging electoral exercises in the country’s recent history and arrives at a time when insecurity, displacement, and lingering effects of a decade‑long conflict remain deeply felt.
According to the UN’s regional envoy for Central Africa, Abdou Abarry, the elections could mark an important turning point as the country attempts to consolidate peace after years of turbulence. Addressing the UN Security Council, he described the polls as an opportunity for the Central African Republic to build on recent recovery efforts and reinforce cooperation with neighbours such as Chad and Cameroon.
Yet the challenges remain significant. Armed groups continue to carry out attacks across various regions, and displacement figures remain high. As of August 2025, the UN refugee agency recorded nearly 665,000 Central Africans living as refugees outside the country, while more than 440,000 remain internally displaced. MINUSCA, the UN peacekeeping mission established in 2014, is still active in providing security support as communities navigate the fragile transition.
Earlier this year, the UN emphasised that the elections represent a critical chance to strengthen democratic governance, promote reconciliation, and stabilise institutions. Voter lists have been published and the political environment is intensifying as the country prepares for a pivotal choice about its future leadership and direction.

The Central African Republic’s journey reminds Africa that nation‑building is a long process, not an event. Stability takes time, especially for younger states whose institutions are still evolving. Elections in such contexts are not simply political rituals. They are investments in the future. Even amid insecurity and uncertainty, the country is showing its determination to move forward. Africa’s story is rarely linear, but its potential is always renewed by people who choose participation over fear and hope over fatigue. The region is watching, and the world will witness yet another example of resilience shaping the continent’s path.
