Morocco’s football federation has announced it will formally appeal disciplinary sanctions imposed by the Confederation of African Football following last month’s Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal.

The federation said the penalties were disproportionate to the seriousness of the incidents that occurred during the January 18 final in Rabat, which Senegal won after extra time.

The match was marred by controversy and a 14‑minute interruption late in regular time after Senegalese players briefly left the pitch in protest over a disallowed goal. Play eventually resumed, with Senegal going on to secure victory.

Financial and Sporting Penalties

CAF imposed a total of $315,000 in fines on Morocco, citing misconduct by players, team officials, and supporters. The governing body also pointed to the alleged use of laser devices aimed at Senegalese players during the match.

Morocco’s appeal to have the final result overturned was rejected by CAF, prompting the federation to challenge the disciplinary measures instead.

Senegal was also fined and sanctioned, but its football federation has said it will respect the disciplinary committee’s ruling.

Player Suspensions

Two Moroccan players received individual punishments.

Forward Ismael Saibari was handed a three‑match suspension and a $100,000 fine for what CAF described as unsporting behaviour.

Team captain and defender Achraf Hakimi received a two‑match ban.

Both players were penalised for attempting to remove the towel of Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy during heavy rain conditions in the latter stages of the match.

Appeal Process Underway

In a statement, Morocco’s football federation said it would pursue all available legal avenues within CAF’s judicial framework, arguing that the sanctions fail to reflect the broader context of the match and the conduct of all parties involved.

The appeal adds another chapter to one of the most contentious AFCON finals in recent years, reigniting debate over refereeing decisions, player conduct, and disciplinary consistency in African football.

CAF has not yet commented on when the appeal will be heard.
