Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko arrived in Jeddah on Sunday, marking the start of an official visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
According to the Saudi Press Agency, Sonko and his accompanying delegation were received at King Abdulaziz International Airport by Prince Saud bin Abdullah bin Jalawi, Governor of Jeddah, along with other Saudi officials.
The brief arrival statement did not immediately outline the full agenda of the visit. However, high-level exchanges between Senegal and Saudi Arabia in recent years have focused on economic cooperation, investment, development partnerships, and broader engagement between West Africa and Gulf states.
Sonko’s visit comes amid growing diplomatic and economic ties between African nations and Gulf countries, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and trade facilitation. Saudi Arabia has expanded its outreach across Africa through investment funds, development financing, and strategic partnerships aligned with its regional and global economic ambitions.
Further details regarding bilateral meetings, agreements, or sectoral cooperation are expected to emerge as the visit progresses.
As African countries continue to strengthen diplomatic and economic partnerships beyond traditional allies, such engagements reflect a broader shift toward diversified global alliances. Senegal, like many nations on the continent, is navigating new strategic relationships while pursuing domestic growth and regional leadership. For a continent whose modern state institutions are still relatively young compared to long-established global powers, these diplomatic steps form part of a longer trajectory toward greater agency, economic resilience, and forward-looking cooperation.
