The Obama Foundation has launched a new volunteer initiative ahead of the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in June 2026, inviting community members to serve as “Ambassadors” who will help welcome visitors and support public engagement at the landmark institution in Chicago.
Announced in Chicago, the programme is rooted in former United States President Barack Obama’s long-standing belief that civic participation and volunteerism are essential to strengthening democratic societies. The initiative will recruit its first cohort of between 75 and 100 volunteers, with plans to expand participation in future phases.
According to the Obama Foundation, the volunteers will serve in public-facing roles designed to create a welcoming and informative experience for visitors arriving at the Center. Their responsibilities will include greeting guests, providing directions, sharing information about exhibitions and events, and helping ensure that each visitor feels personally welcomed upon arrival.
Valerie Jarrett, Chief Executive Officer of the Obama Foundation, said the programme reflects the Foundation’s broader mission to foster service, connection and leadership.
“The Obama Presidential Center is a place where the world meets the best of the city of Chicago, and our volunteers will help bring that vision to life every day,” Jarrett said. “As Ambassadors, they will create a welcoming and inclusive experience for visitors while representing the strength, resilience and leadership of this community.”
Recruitment efforts are primarily focused on residents of Chicago, particularly those from the city’s South Side where the Obama Presidential Center is being built. The Foundation says the initiative is designed to ensure that the people who help welcome the world to the Center reflect the communities that shaped President Obama’s early work as a community organiser.
Volunteerism has been a defining theme throughout Obama’s public life. His presidential campaign famously mobilised more than 2.2 million grassroots volunteers across the United States, demonstrating the power of citizen participation in democratic politics.
During his presidency, that emphasis continued through national service initiatives such as the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act and the United We Serve programme, which expanded opportunities for Americans to engage in community service across the country.
The Obama Foundation says its new volunteer programme carries that legacy forward by integrating civic participation into the daily life of the Obama Presidential Center once it opens its doors to the public.
Applications for the volunteer programme are currently available online, with interviews already underway for the inaugural group of Ambassadors. The first volunteer training session is scheduled for April 2026 in preparation for the Center’s soft opening ahead of its official launch in June.
While the initiative is centred in Chicago, the broader philosophy behind it resonates far beyond the United States. Around the world, civic engagement remains a powerful driver of community resilience and democratic participation. In Africa, where many countries continue to strengthen democratic institutions and youth participation in governance, volunteerism and community leadership remain essential pillars of nation building. For a continent whose modern states are still relatively young, programmes that encourage service and citizen participation offer a reminder that strong societies are ultimately built by the people who choose to contribute to them.
