Addis Ababa — Ethiopia’s technology and hospitality sectors are set to converge in one of the region’s most ambitious innovation initiatives with the launch of Hospitality Hackathon 2026, a national program designed to develop artificial intelligence solutions for the tourism and hospitality industry.

The two-day program, initiated by Kuriftu Resorts in collaboration with ALX Ethiopia and WeVenture, marks the second edition of the Hospitality Hackathon and aims to deepen the intersection between Africa’s growing technology ecosystem and its rapidly expanding tourism sector.

Day 2 — Ethiopia’s first Hospitality Hackathon at Kuriftu African Village, Burayu — April 13, 2025

The program will bring together young innovators, emerging startups, university students, and early career IT professionals to build AI driven technologies capable of transforming how resorts operate and how guests experience travel across Africa.

The Voice of Africa Group will serve as the program’s official media and distribution partner, supporting event coverage, ecosystem storytelling and international media exposure.

The initiative will unfold across two flagship locations in Addis Ababa.

Day 1: April 4th at the Capstone ALX Tech Hub in Lideta

Day 2: April 18th at Kuriftu African Village

Organizers say the program is designed not simply as a hackathon, but as a pipeline connecting youth talent development, innovation and venture creation within Africa’s growing tourism economy.

A Strategic Platform for Hospitality Innovation

Tourism and hospitality remain among Africa’s fastest growing economic sectors.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, the industry contributed over $168 billion to Africa’s economy in 2024, representing approximately 6.8 percent of the continent’s GDP, while supporting more than 24 million jobs. Yet many hospitality operators across the continent still rely on legacy systems and manual processes.

The Hospitality Hackathon aims to address this gap by inviting teams of young developers, startup founders and technology enthusiasts to build AI powered solutions capable of improving resort operations, enhancing guest services and unlocking new revenue streams for tourism businesses.

Participants will work in teams to design practical prototypes that integrate artificial intelligence directly into hospitality environments, including intelligent guest services, operational automation, predictive analytics and digital experience platforms.

Organizers say the goal is clear. Move from ideas to deployable innovation.

From Hackathon to Venture Creation

Day 2 — Ethiopia’s first Hospitality Hackathon at Kuriftu African Village, Burayu — April 13, 2025

Unlike traditional hackathons focused purely on competition, Hospitality Hackathon 2026 introduces a structured model designed to support real business development.

Participating teams must form and register in advance, encouraging stronger collaboration and clearer project direction before the event begins.

A pre event training program will prepare participants through workshops covering:

  • AI tools and development frameworks
  • Hospitality industry challenges
  • Rapid product prototyping
  • Startup pitching and storytelling

Following the competition, winning teams will enter a three month incubation program through WeVenture, where they will receive mentorship, workspace access and support to refine their solutions for commercial deployment.

AI Takes Center Stage

Day 2 — Ethiopia’s first Hospitality Hackathon at Kuriftu African Village, Burayu — April 13, 2025

Artificial intelligence will be a mandatory component of all solutions developed during the hackathon.

Organizers are also exploring potential collaboration with OpenAI, which could provide technical support, access to advanced AI tools and mentorship opportunities for participants.

The initiative reflects a broader shift in global hospitality, where AI technologies are increasingly used to optimize operations, personalise guest experiences and improve operational efficiency.

Industry analysts estimate that AI adoption in hospitality could grow into a multi billion dollar global market over the next decade.

Technology Leadership and Industry Dialogue

A highlight of the program will be a fireside conversation with Ethiopian technology entrepreneur Besufekad Getachew, founder and CEO of Eagle Lion Systems.

The session will explore technology leadership, innovation ecosystems and the future of artificial intelligence across African industries.

Organizers say the fireside format will provide participants with direct insight into how advanced technologies can be translated into scalable business models.

Kuriftu African Village as Innovation Showcase

The final stage of the competition will take place at Kuriftu African Village, one of Ethiopia’s flagship hospitality destinations.

Teams will present their solutions to a judging panel composed of technology leaders, investors and hospitality executives.

Projects will be evaluated based on:

  • AI integration
  • Technical feasibility
  • Innovation
  • Business value for hospitality operators
  • Quality of presentation

The winning team will receive 150,000 Ethiopian Birr in prize funding, along with incubation support, access to Kuriftu hospitality experiences and continued mentorship through the venture ecosystem.

Building Africa’s Hospitality Technology Ecosystem

For organizers, the program represents more than a single event.

It is designed as a long term platform connecting Africa’s emerging technology talent with real industry challenges, particularly in tourism, a sector expected to grow significantly across the continent over the next decade.

By combining training, product development, incubation and industry collaboration, the Hospitality Hackathon aims to position Ethiopia as a regional hub for hospitality technology innovation.

Through its partnership, The Voice of Africa Group will document the process, showcase emerging innovators and amplify the solutions created during the program to audiences across Africa and the global diaspora.

As the hospitality industry across Africa modernises, initiatives like this signal a growing recognition that the next generation of tourism innovation will be built not only in resorts and hotels, but also in Africa’s technology labs, universities and startup ecosystems.
