The election of Pope Leo XIV has drawn swift and heartfelt congratulations from world leaders, including United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, who hailed the moment as one of “profound spiritual significance” and a renewed opportunity to deepen collaboration between the UN and the Holy See.

In a statement issued by the UN Spokesperson’s Office, Guterres extended his “heartfelt congratulations” to Pope Leo XIV and Catholics around the globe, calling attention to the weight of the papacy at a time of mounting global crises. “Our world is in need of the strongest voices for peace, social justice, human dignity and compassion,” Guterres said.

He expressed confidence that Pope Leo XIV would continue the moral and diplomatic legacy of his predecessor, Pope Francis, particularly in the areas of climate action, migration, conflict resolution, and poverty eradication themes central to both the UN Charter and Catholic social teaching.

A Legacy of Collaboration

The relationship between the United Nations and the Holy See is unique. Although the Holy See is a non-member state with permanent observer status at the UN, it has played a prominent role in many of the world body’s debates on ethics, development, and human rights. Under Pope Francis, the Vatican became an outspoken advocate for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and joined international efforts like the Global Compact for Migration.

In his message, the Secretary-General signalled his intent to “build on the long legacy of cooperation between the United Nations and the Holy See nurtured most recently by Pope Francis to advance solidarity, foster reconciliation and build a just and sustainable world for all.”

This continuity matters. In recent years, Pope Francis addressed the UN General Assembly twice once in person in 2015, where he emphasized the moral imperative of environmental stewardship, and again via video in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, urging a multilateral response rooted in human fraternity.

With the election of Pope Leo XIV, that moral voice on the world stage is expected to remain strong. Guterres underscored this expectation, pointing to the new pope’s inaugural words: “May peace be with all the world” a message of unity that resonates across the secular and religious divide.

Global Challenges, Shared Values

The Secretary-General’s remarks also reflect a growing recognition of the role faith leaders and institutions play in addressing the world’s most pressing issues from climate change to conflict mediation to humanitarian relief.

According to the UN Alliance of Civilizations, faith-based organizations are often “first responders” in fragile settings and play a crucial role in fostering social cohesion. Similarly, the Vatican’s diplomatic corps remains one of the most influential soft-power entities globally, engaging in quiet diplomacy in some of the world’s most difficult conflict zones.

Guterres concluded his statement with an affirmation of shared values across religions and nations. “Despite the rich diversity of backgrounds and beliefs,” he said, “people everywhere share a common goal: May peace be with all the world.”

Looking Ahead

As Pope Leo XIV begins his papacy, many in the international community will be watching closely to see how he chooses to shape the Holy See’s global voice. Will he follow the activist, outward-looking style of Pope Francis, or chart a more conservative course?

Whatever direction he takes, the channels between the Holy See and the United Nations remain open and more relevant than ever.
