The story of three young women, Simone Laws, Fatima Elsheikh and Arona Dijeng, is one of passion, dedication, and community. As students of the School of International Service at American University, they were deeply moved by the ongoing humanitarian crisis in East Africa, where two years of severe drought has left many people struggling to survive.

Inspired to help, Simone, Fatima, and Arona joined forces with Maasai Development Incorporated, a charity that works directly with Chief Joseph ole Tipanko of the Maasai community in Kenya. They set a goal to raise $2,000 to provide emergency food rations for 1,000 people for a month, offering a vital lifeline to those affected by the devastating effects of the drought.

Simone’s incredible journey took her to Kenya, where she was able to meet Chief Joseph and see firsthand the impact of the drought. Fatima was instrumental in spreading the word and rallying support, while Arona brought her creative flair to the project, working on the main fundraising initiative and also marketing. She even created a special drink called “French Kiss” at The Davenport Coffee Lounge at American University, with proceeds going to Maasai Development Incorporated.

The girls hit their $2,000 goal, but their fundraising efforts haven’t come to a close. They are still passionate about supporting the Maasai community and are determined to keep raising funds. People can still show their support by donating through Venmo.

“Every donation makes a difference,” says Simone. “We are so grateful for the support we’ve received so far, but there is still so much more to do. We’re in this for the long haul and won’t stop until we’ve made a meaningful impact.”

Fatima adds, “Being a part of this project has been an incredibly enriching experience. We have seen the power of community and the impact that small acts of kindness can have. We urge everyone to support this cause and help make a difference in the lives of those affected by the drought.”

Arona echoes these sentiments, saying, “I am proud to be a part of this mission. I believe that we can make a real difference in the world, and this is just the start. Together, we can achieve anything.”

The girls’ story is a testament to the power of determination, compassion, and community. It is a story of hope and the belief that together, we can create a better world. Join Simone, Fatima, and Arona in their mission to help those affected by the drought in East Africa by donating through Venmo.
