From the late 1950s to the end of the 1960s, African countries received their independence from the European oppressors left and right. What a time to behold! After resistance, grit, and negotiations the leaders of these movements ensured that their nations would be free and autonomous from foreign rule! If you look carefully, you will notice that a number of these countries (8 in total) received their independence in October, from October 1st down to October 29th. Each week we get the pleasure of celebrating the freedom of multiple countries and we want to commemorate that by dedicating the month of October to INDEPENDENCE!

The countries that received their independence this month include:

  • Guinea-Bissau: October 2nd, 1958
  • Nigeria: October 1st, 1960
  • Morocco (International Zone): October 29th, 1956
  • Cameroon: October 1st, 1961
  • Uganda: October 9th, 1962
  • Zambia: October 24th, 1964
  • Lesotho: October 4th, 1966
  • Equatorial Guinea: October 12th, 1968

A breath of fresh air is taken by the Indigenous people of these lands on these days. Even with current issues that seek attention, these days are still celebratory days because they remind us all, as Africans, that we overcame oppression in some form at one point in time and we can do it again. I like to think of it as a rejuvenation, a restart, a day to sit down and look at everything going on and think… “How can we make this even better, so that next year, we have even more to celebrate?”

Something to take note of is the fact that this independence spread across all five regions of Africa (West, East, South, Central, and North). It is a beautiful thing to all be connected in freedom all across the continent, and be able to all celebrate as one in our different countries as we all embrace our beautiful cultures.

This month we celebrate not only the fact that we gained our independence, but we also celebrate all the people who fought for it! Not only the revolutionaries hailing from the countries mentioned above but every African revolutionary who fought for all of us! Every African revolutionary who inspired us to continue going and continue fighting until we got what we wanted. We appreciate each and every one of them and dedicate this month to every one of them! Join us as we celebrate our INDEPENDENCE!!!!
