Guinea Bissau is facing another moment of political uncertainty after military officers announced they had taken control of the country and detained President Umaro Sissoco Embaló. The development comes as the nation awaited the results of Sunday’s presidential election, a process observers described as peaceful and orderly.

According to government sources, Embaló, his rival Fernando Dias, former Prime Minister Domingos Pereira, and Interior Minister Botché Candé have all been detained. Senior military leaders, including Gen Biague Na Ntan and his deputy Gen Mamadou Touré, were reportedly arrested as well.
Hours before the military announcement, gunfire was heard around the presidential palace in Bissau. The officers later appeared on state television to confirm that they had assumed control of the state apparatus, suspended the electoral process and announced the closure of borders alongside a night time curfew. They claimed they acted to prevent what they described as a political plot supported by a “well known drug baron.”
Regional observers from the African Union and Ecowas expressed concern, noting that both leading candidates had earlier agreed to accept the will of the people. Portugal also called for a return to constitutional order.
Guinea Bissau has endured repeated instability since independence in 1974. Its coastline and archipelago have long made it a transit corridor for drug trafficking, adding deeper layers of risk to governance and security. President Embaló, elected in 2019, has said on several occasions that he survived earlier coup attempts, though opposition groups have criticised his approach to dissent.
