The Moroccan caftan has officially been added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List, following a decision made on Wednesday during a meeting of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in India. Morocco submitted the caftan’s candidacy earlier this year, detailing what the culture ministry described as key elements that reflect the depth, evolution and cultural significance of the garment across more than eight centuries. In a statement published on X, the ministry highlighted that the caftan represents an exceptional technical and aesthetic heritage while serving as a national symbol worn during major social and religious occasions.
The traditional attire, celebrated by artisans and fashion houses globally, continues to stand as a marker of identity, craftsmanship and pride. The culture ministry expressed gratitude to Moroccan artisans and civil society for supporting efforts to protect and elevate the caftan’s legacy. Local media also framed UNESCO’s decision as a win for Morocco amid longstanding cultural disputes with Algeria over the origins of the garment. With the international designation now secured, Morocco has stated that it hopes the recognition will help protect the caftan from cultural appropriation.
According to additional reports from Morocco World News, the listing reinforces the historical continuity of the caftan and its enduring influence within Moroccan cultural life. It marks another milestone for the preservation of North African heritage at a time when global attention to cultural identity is growing. And while debates over ownership may persist, the recognition itself speaks to the strength of Moroccan craftsmanship and the artisans who keep its traditions alive. As nations across the continent continue elevating their cultural assets onto global stages, this moment signals how Africa’s deep-rooted creative heritage remains a powerful force that can thrive for generations with the right support, reminding us that a young continent still has limitless room to grow and shape the world in ways that honour its past while defining its future.
