Nigeria international Alex Iwobi has described the Africa Cup of Nations as a “special” tournament, highlighting its cultural significance and emotional weight for African players, according to reporting by BBC Newsbeat.
Speaking ahead of the 2025 tournament in Morocco, the Fulham midfielder said AFCON is about more than football. He described it as a space where African cultures, music, identity, and national pride are celebrated alongside competition. With 24 teams taking part, the tournament brings together players from across the continent and the diaspora, many of whom play in Europe’s top leagues.
Iwobi will represent Nigeria as the Super Eagles look to rebound from their 2–1 loss to Ivory Coast in the 2023 final. He said that defeat remains fresh but has become motivation rather than regret. Nigeria are also coming off the disappointment of failing to qualify for the World Cup, a setback Iwobi acknowledged openly, saying the team feels a responsibility to respond on the continental stage.
Born in Lagos and raised in London, Iwobi previously represented England at youth level before choosing Nigeria in 2015, a decision he says made him feel more connected to his roots. He has since earned over 90 caps, making him one of Nigeria’s most experienced players. Alongside teammates such as Ademola Lookman, Calvin Bassey, and Ola Aina, Iwobi is part of a generation of diaspora players who have strengthened national teams across Africa.
Iwobi also addressed ongoing debates around the global recognition of AFCON. Earlier comments from European pundits questioning the tournament’s status sparked backlash, but Iwobi said awareness is growing as more Premier League players participate. Still, he believes the competition deserves greater respect.
The 2025 edition is hosted by Morocco, with Nigeria aiming to win the tournament for the first time since 2013. For Iwobi, victory would be deeply personal. He described past winners being treated like royalty back home and said lifting the trophy would be an unforgettable experience for his family and community.
As Africa’s biggest football tournament continues to evolve, AFCON remains a reminder that the continent’s influence on the global game is cultural, emotional, and deeply rooted in identity. Africa’s football story is still unfolding, driven by a young generation that blends global exposure with local pride, and that future is only just beginning.
