Senegal’s emerging oil and gas sector recorded a major milestone in 2025 as national crude oil production exceeded official forecasts, reinforcing the country’s growing role in Africa’s energy landscape.

According to Senegal’s Ministry of Energy, Oil and Mines, total oil output for the year reached 36.1 million barrels, significantly higher than the initial projection of 30.53 million barrels. Revised estimates released mid-year had already increased expectations to 34.7 million barrels, making the final results a notable overperformance.

Authorities attributed the production surge to strong reservoir performance, effective well maintenance, and improved operational efficiency across offshore facilities. The country’s oil production is centered on the Sangomar offshore oil and gas field, located approximately 100 kilometers off the coast of Dakar. Operations at the field began in 2024 under Australian energy firm Woodside Energy.

In December alone, Senegal sold three crude oil cargoes on international markets, totaling nearly 2.94 million barrels, underscoring rising global demand for its offshore output. The country also recorded encouraging results in liquefied natural gas exports, with LNG production peaking in December 2025, when 0.5 million cubic meters were shipped abroad.

The strong performance positions Senegal as one of West Africa’s most promising new energy producers. Government officials say continued investment in infrastructure, maintenance, and export capacity will be critical to sustaining momentum while ensuring energy revenues contribute to long-term national development.
