Tunis — Tunisia plans to expand its main international airport in a $1 billion infrastructure project aimed at significantly increasing passenger capacity and supporting the country’s growing tourism sector.
The Tunisian transport ministry said the expansion of Carthage International Airport will include the construction of a new terminal covering approximately 80,000 square metres, designed to modernize the facility and increase passenger processing capacity.
Officials say the project will add new check‑in counters, expanded security lanes and upgraded passenger services as Tunisia seeks to accommodate rising air traffic.
The airport currently handles millions of travelers each year and serves as the country’s primary aviation gateway.
Tourism Recovery Driving Expansion
Tunisia’s tourism sector has rebounded strongly after the global pandemic severely disrupted international travel.
According to government data, Carthage International Airport handled around 7.2 million passengers in 2024, reflecting a steady recovery in international arrivals.
Authorities say the expansion is part of a broader national strategy to strengthen Tunisia’s position as a major tourism destination in North Africa and the Mediterranean.
Improved airport capacity is expected to support increased international flights, enhance passenger experience and stimulate tourism‑related economic activity.
Infrastructure Investment Amid Economic Pressure
The government has not yet announced how the project will be financed.
Tunisia’s economy has faced significant challenges in recent years, including high public debt, inflation pressures and slow economic growth.
Large infrastructure investments are viewed by policymakers as a way to stimulate economic activity while strengthening key sectors such as tourism and transportation.
Analysts say modernizing aviation infrastructure could also help Tunisia compete with other Mediterranean destinations that are investing heavily in tourism and airport capacity.
Aviation Growth Across North Africa
Air travel demand across North Africa has been gradually increasing as tourism recovers and regional connectivity expands.
Expanding Carthage Airport is expected to improve Tunisia’s ability to handle future growth in passenger numbers while positioning the country as a more competitive aviation hub.
The planned upgrades will focus on increasing efficiency at the airport while improving overall passenger processing and operational capacity.
Officials say the project reflects Tunisia’s long‑term strategy to modernize its transport infrastructure and support the continued recovery of its tourism industry.
