Egypt is moving to secure alternative crude supplies from Libya as disruptions in the Gulf threaten its energy imports, highlighting shifting dynamics in regional oil flows amid escalating geopolitical tensions.
According to officials familiar with the discussions, Egypt is seeking to import at least one million barrels of Libyan crude per month as it looks to offset reduced shipments from Kuwait.
Supply Shock from the Gulf
The move comes after the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation declared force majeure on oil exports following disruptions to shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait, a critical artery for global energy markets, handles roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil trade. Recent navigation disturbances have significantly reduced vessel traffic, tightening supply and pushing prices upward.
Egypt had previously relied on Kuwaiti crude imports ranging between one and two million barrels per month. It also receives around one million barrels monthly from Saudi Aramco under credit arrangements.
With Gulf flows under pressure, Cairo is now accelerating talks with National Oil Corporation and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation to secure replacement volumes.
Libya Emerges as Strategic Alternative
Libya, home to Africa’s largest proven oil reserves, is increasingly positioned as a key alternative supplier for regional markets.
The proposed deal would strengthen energy cooperation between the two North African nations while offering Egypt a geographically closer and potentially more stable supply route compared to Gulf shipments currently affected by maritime risks.
For Libya, the agreement could provide an opportunity to expand export volumes and reinforce its role in regional energy markets at a time when global demand remains volatile.
Energy Markets Under Pressure
The developments come amid broader instability across global energy markets.
In addition to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, QatarEnergy recently suspended operations at its largest liquefied natural gas facility following a reported drone attack, further tightening supply conditions.
Analysts warn that continued disruptions could drive oil prices higher, with ripple effects across fuel costs, inflation, and economic stability in import-dependent economies.
Strategic Shift in Energy Sourcing
Egypt’s move underscores a broader trend among energy-importing countries: diversifying supply sources to reduce exposure to geopolitical risks.
By turning to Libya, Egypt is not only addressing immediate supply gaps but also reinforcing regional energy integration across North Africa.
