A First Lady’s Platform for Social Impact

The Fatoumatta Bah Barrow Foundation (FaBB), led by Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow, operates as a national charitable platform focused on supporting disadvantaged communities across The Gambia. Community-based treatments have formed a key part of this effort, including responses to diarrhoea, pneumonia, malaria, and the facilitation of surgical procedures where access would otherwise be limited. These interventions reflect a practical, frontline approach to healthcare delivery, particularly in underserved communities.

The Foundation’s model aligns closely with broader public health priorities, focusing on early intervention and accessible treatment as a means of reducing preventable child mortality.

Strengthening Maternal and Newborn Care

Beyond child health, FaBB extends its support to maternal and newborn care. Its programmes are designed to improve access to quality healthcare services for pregnant women and newborns, particularly in emergency settings where existing systems may be under strain.

Expanding Reach Through Partnerships and Outreach

Recent initiatives underscore the Foundation’s growing emphasis on partnerships and direct community engagement. In March, under the leadership of the First Lady, FaBB partnered with the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency to deliver a Ramadan food distribution exercise within the Kanifing Municipal Council.

Through this initiative, 300 bags of rice, 300 bags of sugar, and 300 gallons of cooking oil were distributed to vulnerable families. The outreach marked the beginning of a broader Ramadan support programme aimed at extending assistance to communities across the country, reinforcing the Foundation’s commitment to dignity-centred humanitarian support.

Strengthening Healthcare Through International Collaboration

FaBB’s commitment to healthcare delivery has also been demonstrated through high-level international partnerships. Between the 15th and 23rd of December 2025, the Foundation facilitated a one-week medical and surgical mission at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in collaboration with the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center.

The mission brought together specialist doctors who delivered critical medical and surgical care to patients, contributing directly to improved health outcomes. The presence of the First Lady during the exercise underscored the importance of institutional leadership in mobilising partnerships that deliver tangible results.

By supporting the visiting medical team and coordinating the mission, the Foundation reinforced its role as both a facilitator and an active participant in strengthening healthcare systems through collaboration.

A Broad Development Agenda

The Foundation’s scope extends beyond healthcare into a wider development framework. Its initiatives include women and youth empowerment programmes, cancer and fertility awareness campaigns, and targeted interventions addressing women’s and children’s health.

It also supports surgical intervention funding schemes, recognising the financial barriers that often prevent access to essential medical procedures. In parallel, FaBB invests in child welfare and education, alongside broader social development outreach programmes aimed at improving quality of life for vulnerable populations.

This multi-sectoral approach reflects an understanding that health outcomes are closely linked to education, economic empowerment, and social stability.
