Dangote Refinery Boosts Exports to Ease Africa’s Fuel Supply Crunch

LAGOS, Nigeria — Africa’s largest refinery, the Dangote Refinery, is ramping up exports of refined fuel and fertiliser across the continent, positioning itself as a critical stabilising force amid ongoing global energy disruptions.

Owned by Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote, the refinery is now operating at full capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, significantly increasing shipments of gasoline and urea to African markets affected by supply shortages linked to the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Exports Surge as Africa Faces Supply Disruptions

Speaking during a high-level visit to the facility in Lagos, Dangote confirmed that the refinery has already exported 17 cargoes of gasoline to African countries in March alone, marking a sharp shift toward regional supply.

“What I can do is assure Nigerians — and most of West Africa, Central Africa, and East Africa — we have the capacity to supply them,” Dangote said.

The increase in exports comes as many African nations grapple with fuel shortages triggered by disruptions in global supply chains, particularly those linked to the ongoing Iran conflict and instability in key shipping routes.

A Strategic Shift Toward African Markets

Historically focused on global markets, particularly the United States and South America for fertiliser exports, the Dangote refinery is now prioritizing Africa.

“In the last couple of days, we’ve been looking mostly to African countries, which we were not doing before,” Dangote added, referring to rising fertiliser shipments across the continent.

The refinery has the capacity to produce up to 3 million metric tons of urea annually, positioning it as a major player not just in energy, but also in agricultural supply chains across Africa.

Balancing Local Prices and Global Demand

Despite operating at full capacity, Nigeria continues to face record-high domestic fuel prices, driven by elevated global crude costs.

Dangote emphasized the need for increased access to locally priced crude oil (naira-denominated) to help reduce fuel costs within Nigeria.

Industry sources indicate that Nigeria’s state oil company is increasing crude allocations to the refinery, with seven cargoes expected in May, up from five in previous months — a move aimed at strengthening domestic refining capacity.

A Key Player in Africa’s Energy Security

The Dangote Refinery’s expansion into regional exports signals a broader transformation in Africa’s energy landscape.

By supplying refined fuel within the continent, the facility is helping reduce reliance on imports, stabilize prices, and strengthen energy security across multiple regions.

As global energy markets remain volatile, the refinery’s growing role underscores Africa’s push toward self-sufficiency and intra-continental trade, particularly in critical sectors like fuel and agriculture.
