ACCRA — Ghana has launched a process to identify a strategic private investor to establish a new national airline, marking a significant step toward restoring a flag carrier more than two decades after the collapse of Ghana Airways.

The Ministry of Transport said it has begun a “market sounding” exercise aimed at attracting experienced airline operators and aviation investors capable of developing a commercially viable and internationally competitive carrier. Under the proposed structure, the selected partner is expected to hold a majority equity stake, signalling a clear shift toward private-sector leadership rather than state control.

The planned airline will be based in Accra and is intended to operate both regional and long-haul routes, connecting Ghana to destinations across Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia. In addition to passenger services, the carrier is expected to include an integrated cargo division, positioning the country as a logistics and aviation hub in West Africa.

Officials said prospective partners must demonstrate strong operational experience, regulatory compliance, and the financial capacity to support fleet acquisition and route expansion. The government has indicated that preparations, including aircraft deployment, should begin in the near term, with initial operations targeted no later than the first quarter of 2027.

Ghana has not had a functioning national airline since 2004, when Ghana Airways ceased operations following prolonged financial difficulties and failed restructuring efforts. Since then, one of West Africa’s largest aviation markets has relied heavily on foreign carriers for international connectivity.

The new initiative reflects broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s aviation sector and support economic growth through improved connectivity, trade, and tourism. By prioritizing private investment and commercial sustainability, authorities aim to avoid the structural challenges that undermined previous state-led models.
