ADDIS ABABA — The Hospitality Hackathon 2026, hosted by Kuriftu Resorts & Spa in partnership with ALX Ethiopia and The Voice of Africa Group, concluded with a high-energy Demo Day at Kuriftu Resorts African Village, marking one of the most ambitious and impactful innovation gatherings in the global hospitality sector.

Building on a record-breaking opening that brought together over 440 innovators and nearly 100 teams at the ALX Capstone Tech Hub, the final stage elevated the program into a full-scale innovation pipeline—positioning Ethiopia as an emerging hub for applied AI and hospitality technology.
From Record-Breaking Start to High-Stakes Finale

The first phase of the hackathon signaled unprecedented demand, with developers, founders, and emerging professionals rapidly forming 96 teams to tackle real-world challenges in hospitality using artificial intelligence.
By Demo Day, that number had been refined to 12 finalist teams, each presenting scalable, high-impact solutions designed to transform guest experience, operational efficiency, and revenue generation across the hospitality industry.
A Global-Caliber Judging Panel
Finalists were evaluated by a panel representing the intersection of technology, investment, and hospitality leadership:
-
Adam Abate — Co-founder of Apposit and investor at Renew Capital, focused on scalability and venture potential

-
Otto Kurzendorfer — General Manager of Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa, bringing over 30 years of global hospitality expertise

-
Temkin Mengistu — Deep tech specialist in AI, cloud systems, and scalable infrastructure

Their evaluation criteria extended beyond technical execution to real-world applicability, long-term viability, and readiness for deployment in live hospitality environments.

Beyond Competition: A Pipeline for Venture Creation

Unlike traditional hackathons, the program was structured as a launchpad for long-term venture development.
Winning teams will now enter incubation, receiving mentorship, infrastructure support, and pathways to commercial deployment—transforming ideas into scalable businesses.
A Defining Moment for Africa’s Innovation Ecosystem

The presence of industry leaders, creators such as Adonay, and high-level participants reinforced the event’s broader significance.
What began as a hackathon evolved into a live demonstration of Africa’s capacity to build globally competitive technology solutions—locally.
The Bigger Picture
Hospitality Hackathon 2026 did not just exceed expectations—it redefined them.
From record-breaking participation to enterprise-ready solutions, the event established a new global standard for what innovation platforms can achieve when industry, talent, and execution align.
The question is no longer whether Africa can build world-class solutions.
It is how fast those solutions will scale.
