South African-born biotechnology entrepreneur and physician Patrick Soon-Shiong has become the richest person in Los Angeles, with an estimated net worth of $8.4 billion according to Forbes’ 2026 rankings.

His rise from a young medical graduate in South Africa to one of the world’s wealthiest healthcare innovators underscores the global impact of African-born talent and entrepreneurship.

Born in Port Elizabeth, now known as Gqeberha, in 1952, Soon-Shiong completed high school at just 16 years old and graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand at age 23 before pursuing opportunities abroad.

Building a Biotech Empire

After relocating first to Canada and later to the United States, Soon-Shiong established himself as a surgeon and transplant specialist before entering the biotechnology industry.

His fortune was built through companies including VivoRx, APP Pharmaceuticals, and Abraxis BioScience.

One of his most notable achievements was the development of Abraxane, a cancer treatment that helped transform his biotechnology ventures into major commercial successes.

According to reports, he sold APP Pharmaceuticals in 2008 and Abraxis BioScience in 2010 for a combined $9.1 billion.

A Global Pattern of South African Success

Soon-Shiong joins a select group of South African-born business leaders who have achieved extraordinary international success.

Among them are entrepreneur Elon Musk, technology pioneer Mark Shuttleworth, and venture capitalist Roelof Botha.

Their achievements illustrate South Africa’s long-standing ability to produce globally competitive innovators, entrepreneurs, and investors who have helped shape industries far beyond the continent.

South Africa Remains Africa’s Wealth Capital

Despite economic pressures, electricity challenges, and the emigration of some wealthy individuals, South Africa remains Africa’s largest millionaire market.

According to the Africa Wealth Report 2025, the country is home to 41,100 dollar millionaires, 112 centi-millionaires, and eight billionaires.

South Africa accounts for approximately 34 percent of all millionaires on the continent.

Johannesburg, Cape Town, and the Western Cape continue to serve as major wealth and investment hubs, supported by sophisticated financial markets, strong legal frameworks, and developed private investment ecosystems.

Keeping Strong Ties to Home

Unlike some business leaders who focus exclusively on international ventures, Soon-Shiong has maintained connections to South Africa’s healthcare sector.

In 2021, he joined President Cyril Ramaphosa in announcing NantSA, a venture designed to expand vaccine development and pharmaceutical manufacturing across Africa.

A vaccine manufacturing facility was launched in Cape Town in 2022, focusing on advanced mRNA and T-cell technologies aimed at strengthening Africa’s pharmaceutical capacity.

These investments have helped position the Western Cape as an emerging life sciences center while creating specialized employment opportunities.

Beyond Billionaire Rankings

Soon-Shiong’s success story carries lessons beyond wealth accumulation.

His journey demonstrates the importance of education, innovation, scientific research, and entrepreneurial ambition in creating long-term economic value.

For policymakers and investors, it also highlights the importance of building environments where talented individuals can scale globally while remaining connected to local economies.

The Next Chapter of African Innovation

Patrick Soon-Shiong’s rise to the top of Los Angeles’ wealth rankings reflects both individual achievement and the global reach of African talent.

His story also serves as a reminder that Africa continues to produce innovators capable of competing at the highest levels of business, science, and technology. As the continent invests in education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and research, more African-born leaders are likely to emerge on the global stage. Africa’s development journey is still unfolding, and the next generation of innovators may build even larger industries while creating opportunities both at home and around the world.
