Morocco has earned recognition as one of the world’s leading silver-producing nations, reinforcing its status as Africa’s dominant force in the precious metals industry.

According to newly released global production rankings, Morocco remains the only African country to feature among the world’s top silver producers, highlighting the country’s growing importance in a market increasingly shaped by industrial demand, renewable energy technologies, and investor interest in strategic minerals.

The achievement underscores Morocco’s expanding influence within the global mining sector and its growing contribution to Africa’s resource-driven economic development.

Morocco Dominates Africa’s Silver Industry

Morocco produced approximately 12 million ounces of silver during the latest reporting period, equivalent to around 373 metric tonnes.

That output places the country far ahead of any other African producer and cements its position as the continent’s leading source of silver. Industry data indicate that Morocco accounts for nearly half of Africa’s total silver production, giving it a dominant role in regional supply.

The country also maintains a strong presence across the Middle East and North Africa region, where it contributes roughly 95% of total silver production and represents the overwhelming majority of regional silver consumption.

Global Leaders Still Control Most Supply

Despite Morocco’s strong performance, global silver production remains heavily concentrated among a handful of major mining nations.

Mexico continues to lead the world in silver output, producing approximately 173 million ounces annually. Peru follows closely behind with 131 million ounces, while China ranks third with more than 113 million ounces.

Together, countries across North and South America account for the majority of global silver production, reflecting the region’s vast mineral reserves and well-established mining industries.

However, Morocco’s inclusion among the world’s top producers demonstrates the growing strategic importance of African mining assets within global commodity markets.

Demand for Silver Continues to Accelerate

Silver has become one of the most sought-after metals in the global economy due to its dual role as both a precious metal and an industrial resource.

The metal is widely used in electronics, solar panels, electric vehicles, telecommunications equipment, and advanced manufacturing technologies. As governments and businesses accelerate investments in clean energy and digital infrastructure, demand for silver continues to rise.

Industry analysts note that global silver demand has exceeded supply for several consecutive years, creating persistent market deficits and increasing pressure on producers to expand output.

This trend has elevated the importance of countries capable of maintaining reliable production levels.

Mining Sector Gains Strategic Importance

For Morocco, growing demand for silver presents significant economic opportunities.

The country has spent years investing in its mining sector while promoting exploration and development projects designed to unlock additional mineral resources. Beyond silver, Morocco possesses substantial reserves of phosphates and other strategic minerals that support both domestic industries and export earnings.

As global competition for critical resources intensifies, Morocco’s mining industry is becoming an increasingly important pillar of national economic growth and industrial development.

The sector also plays a key role in attracting foreign investment and supporting employment across several regions of the country.

A Precious Metal Shaping Future Opportunities

Morocco’s emergence among the world’s leading silver producers reflects more than just mining success. It highlights the country’s growing role in supplying materials essential to the technologies and industries driving the global economy.

With demand expected to remain strong in the years ahead, Morocco is well positioned to strengthen its influence within international commodity markets while reinforcing Africa’s presence in the global mining landscape.

As governments, manufacturers, and investors continue searching for reliable sources of strategic minerals, Morocco’s silver industry could become an even more significant contributor to both regional development and global supply chains.
