Cape Verde national team goalkeeper Vozinha received an emotional welcome from hundreds of supporters after arriving in Santiago, Chile, to complete his move to Chilean football giants Colo Colo.

Fans gathered at Santiago’s international airport waving flags, displaying banners and chanting the goalkeeper’s name after his arrival on Sunday, bringing an end to several days of uncertainty caused by visa issues and travel delays.

The 40 year old goalkeeper has become one of African football’s most recognizable figures following his standout performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he played a key role in Cape Verde’s impressive campaign and earned admiration from football supporters around the world.

His performances have significantly raised his international profile, making his move to Colo Colo one of the most talked about transfers involving an African goalkeeper this year.

Fans Welcome a World Cup Star

Supporters described Vozinha’s arrival as a major moment for both the club and Chilean football.

Colo Colo fan Marcos Barrera said supporters were excited about the goalkeeper’s arrival and hopeful he would help the club compete for domestic silverware before returning to the Copa Libertadores.

“What excites me the most is seeing Vozinha become champion with Colo Colo,” Barrera said.

Another supporter, Sebastián Paredes, said the goalkeeper had earned widespread recognition following his World Cup performances.

“The Colo Colo supporters and the whole country are eagerly waiting for this player, who came to prominence during the World Cup,” Paredes said. “Now he has to earn his place at Colo Colo through talent, dedication, hard work, commitment and by winning over the supporters.”

Cape Verde’s Growing Football Reputation

Vozinha’s move reflects the increasing recognition African players continue to receive on the global football stage.

Cape Verde has steadily established itself as one of Africa’s most competitive emerging football nations, producing players who continue to attract interest from clubs across Europe, South America and beyond.

The transfer also comes during a challenging period for Chilean football.

Chile failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup for a third consecutive tournament after finishing at the bottom of the South American qualifying standings, making the arrival of a player with recent World Cup success an added source of optimism for Colo Colo supporters.

Vozinha now begins a new chapter in one of South America’s most historic football clubs, where expectations will be high following the excitement surrounding his arrival.
