Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that FIFA has opened an investigation into allegations of racial abuse directed at Antonio Rüdiger during Real Madrid’s recent Club World Cup match against Mexican side Pachuca. The incident took place during their 3–1 victory in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Rüdiger reported being the target of racist language following an on-pitch altercation with Pachuca captain Gustavo Cabral.

According to Alonso, Rüdiger immediately informed officials after the exchange, prompting the match referee to invoke FIFA’s anti-racism protocol a structured response designed to combat racist behavior in football. The first step in the protocol involves stopping play and issuing a stadium-wide warning, which was reportedly carried out by Brazilian referee Ramon Abatti.

“That’s what Rüdiger said, and we believe him. There is no place for racism in football or society,” Alonso said in the post-match press conference.

“FIFA is now investigating the matter, and we fully support their efforts. There must be zero tolerance in situations like this.”

FIFA has not yet released an official statement, but the activation of the protocol automatically triggers a review process by its disciplinary committee. Investigators are expected to examine video footage, referee reports, and any available audio to determine whether further action should be taken. Depending on the outcome, FIFA could issue sanctions ranging from warnings and fines to suspensions or match bans for individuals found guilty.

This incident adds to a troubling pattern of racism in football, with Rüdiger himself having previously spoken out about racial abuse he faced while playing in the Premier League for Chelsea. He was a vocal critic of how incidents were handled, expressing frustration at what he called a lack of meaningful change.

“We always say we must fight racism, but nothing really changes,” Rüdiger said in 2021, highlighting the emotional toll such experiences have on players.

The Club World Cup, one of FIFA’s flagship tournaments, is under added scrutiny as it seeks to uphold its commitment to fair play and anti-discrimination. Critics have pointed out that while FIFA has anti-racism banners and slogans, real progress must come from consistent enforcement and transparent disciplinary actions.

As FIFA’s investigation continues, both Real Madrid and the broader football community await its findings. Meanwhile, Alonso reiterated that Real Madrid stands firmly behind Rüdiger.

“The support is total. As a club and as a team, we are united behind him.”

If the allegations are confirmed, this case could become a pivotal moment in how international football bodies address racism, particularly during global tournaments watched by millions.
