President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, on 25th June met with billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates on the sidelines of the Gavi Vaccine Alliance Replenishment Summit held in Brussels. The high-profile meeting reaffirmed a decade-long collaboration between Ghana and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, focused on improving global health outcomes, particularly in Africa.

President Mahama, attending the summit as a prominent African advocate for universal health coverage, used the opportunity to commend Gates for the Foundation’s consistent support for Ghana’s healthcare development. He expressed appreciation for the Foundation’s role in initiatives such as the Free Primary Healthcare Programme, the establishment of a National Vaccine Institute, and the strengthening of the National Health Insurance Scheme.

“I thank Bill Gates and the Foundation for their extensive philanthropic contributions to Ghana. Our country has directly benefited from their investments in vaccines, public health systems, and disease prevention,” Mahama said during the bilateral engagement.

The summit jointly hosted by the European Union and the Gates Foundation aims to raise funds for Gavi’s 2026–2030 strategic period, with a goal of vaccinating 500 million children and preventing over 150 potential disease outbreaks worldwide.

In his address, Mahama underscored the critical need for international cooperation in combating vaccine inequity and supporting vulnerable populations. He stressed that sustained investment in healthcare, especially for low- and middle-income nations, is vital for resilience against future pandemics.

“No country is safe until every country is safe. Investment in vaccine infrastructure must be continuous and inclusive,” Mahama stated to summit attendees.

Though public attention had speculated about possible technology investments, no announcement was made regarding a $20 billion tech investment from Gates or the Foundation into Ghana. The meeting’s primary focus remained on healthcare, vaccine equity, and partnership strategies.

Bill Gates echoed Mahama’s sentiments, highlighting Ghana’s leadership role in West Africa’s healthcare transformation and commending the former president’s advocacy on global platforms.

Ghana has long benefited from Gates Foundation funding in areas such as malaria control, maternal health, polio eradication, and digital health records. Under Mahama’s presidency (2012–2016), Ghana accelerated its immunization programs with support from Gavi and other international partners.

Today’s meeting signals a renewed commitment between Ghanaian leadership and global philanthropic actors to address enduring public health challenges through cooperation, funding, and policy innovation.

As the Gavi summit continues in Brussels, stakeholders hope to raise over $9 billion to support immunization efforts across 57 low-income countries. Mahama’s involvement marks a continued presence of African leadership in shaping global health priorities and positions Ghana as a model for sustained investment in public well-being.
