Nigeria is mourning the loss of one of its most prominent political figures, as former President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82.

According to a statement released by his family and shared through his official X (formerly Twitter) account by spokesperson Garba Shehu, Buhari died on the afternoon of Sunday, July 13, 2025, while undergoing medical treatment at a private clinic in London, United Kingdom.

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. The family … has announced the passing of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” the post read, invoking the Islamic prayer commonly said upon the death of a loved one.

A Life in Service: Military and Civilian Leadership

Born in 1942, Muhammadu Buhari carved out a distinctive path in Nigeria’s political history, holding power both as a military leader and later as a democratically elected president. A retired Major General, Buhari rose to national prominence when he became Head of State in 1983, following a military coup. His tenure lasted until 1985.

Three decades later, he made history by returning to power through the ballot box. In 2015, Buhari became Nigeria’s president after defeating an incumbent an unprecedented event in the country’s democratic journey. He went on to serve two full terms, concluding his presidency in May 2023.

Focus on Reform and Security

Throughout his leadership, both military and civilian, Buhari was known for his firm stance on anti-corruption, national security, and economic stabilization. He spearheaded efforts to combat the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast, a conflict that had destabilized communities and displaced millions.

His administration also took on reforms in public spending, emphasizing fiscal discipline and attempting to strengthen national infrastructure, although outcomes were often mixed and met with criticism, particularly concerning economic stagnation and rising unemployment.

Additionally, Buhari held the position of Minister of Petroleum Resources, underscoring his influence on one of Nigeria’s most vital economic sectors.

Health Challenges and Public Concern

In the latter years of his presidency, Buhari’s health became a subject of national attention. His repeated medical trips to the United Kingdom and extended absences from state duties sparked widespread speculation and concern. Despite the controversy surrounding his health and transparency in governance, he remained a key figure in shaping Nigeria’s political discourse.

A Nation Reflects

News of Buhari’s passing has triggered a wave of reactions across Nigeria and the diaspora. Social media platforms have been flooded with tributes, criticisms, and reflections on his complex legacy from military strongman to elected statesman.

While his leadership was often divisive, many Nigerians are taking this moment to honor his contributions to the country’s history and governance.

Funeral arrangements and official protocols surrounding his burial are expected to be announced by the family and relevant government authorities in the coming days.
