Ethiopian Airlines is set to deepen its strategic footprint in the Middle East with the launch of a new route to Jizan, further reinforcing its role as a primary aviation bridge between Africa and the Gulf region.

Scheduled to commence in early 2026, the Jizan service will become the airline’s fifth destination in Saudi Arabia, joining Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, and Madinah in an already robust network that supports passenger travel, cargo movement, religious tourism, and trade flows between the two regions.

A Strategic Addition to a High-Growth Market

The expansion reflects Ethiopian Airlines’ long-term strategy of aligning route development with economic, demographic, and mobility trends linking Africa and the Middle East. Saudi Arabia remains one of the airline’s most important markets outside Africa, with more than 40 weekly passenger and cargo flights currently operating across the Kingdom.

By adding Jizan, Ethiopian Airlines is extending connectivity to one of Saudi Arabia’s emerging economic and logistics hubs, offering travelers and businesses in southern Saudi Arabia more direct access to East Africa and the airline’s vast global network via Addis Ababa.

Supporting Pilgrimage, Trade, and Tourism

The new route is expected to play a meaningful role in supporting religious travel, particularly for African pilgrims undertaking Hajj and Umrah. Ethiopian Airlines has long been a key carrier for pilgrimage traffic, and the Jizan service provides additional flexibility and capacity during peak travel periods.

Beyond religious travel, the route is positioned to facilitate growing business and leisure demand. Jizan’s development as an economic zone and port city has increased interest from African traders, investors, and logistics operators. The airline’s cargo capabilities are expected to complement passenger services, strengthening bilateral trade and supply chains between Africa and the Gulf.

Benefits for African Travelers and the Diaspora

For African travelers, the Jizan route enhances choice and convenience when flying to Saudi Arabia. Improved frequency and network depth allow for smoother connections, competitive scheduling, and greater access to secondary Saudi cities that are becoming increasingly important for commerce and tourism.

The expansion also benefits African diaspora communities with ties to Saudi Arabia, making travel more efficient for family visits, business engagements, and cultural exchange.

Reinforcing Ethiopian Airlines’ Global Leadership

The addition of Jizan underscores Ethiopian Airlines’ position as Africa’s leading carrier by network reach and operational scale. By consistently expanding into high-demand corridors such as the Africa–Gulf axis, the airline continues to strengthen its relevance to global mobility while supporting Africa’s integration into international trade and tourism systems.

As Ethiopian Airlines advances its Middle East growth strategy, the Jizan route stands as both a commercial milestone and a strategic signal: Africa–Gulf connectivity is no longer peripheral, but central to the future of global aviation.

With operations set to begin in early 2026, the new service is expected to further consolidate Ethiopian Airlines’ role as a critical connector between Africa, the Middle East, and the wider world.
