Véron Mosengo-Omba Resigns as CAF General Secretary After Five Years in Leadership

Véron Mosengo-Omba has stepped down as general secretary of the Confederation of African Football, bringing an end to a five-year tenure at the heart of African football’s administrative leadership.

The Swiss-Congolese official confirmed his resignation on Sunday, stating that he intends to focus on personal projects after a period that saw him play a central role in shaping CAF’s institutional direction.

A Key Figure in CAF’s Modern Era

Mosengo-Omba joined CAF in 2021 after leaving FIFA, where he had worked closely within football’s global governance structure.

During his time at CAF, he served as general secretary under president Patrice Motsepe, contributing to administrative reforms and efforts to stabilize and modernize the organization.

His tenure coincided with a period of transition for CAF, as the body sought to improve governance standards, strengthen financial systems, and rebuild credibility across African football.

Departure After Legal Clearance

Mosengo-Omba’s exit follows the closure of an investigation by Swiss authorities into allegations of financial wrongdoing.

In January 2025, prosecutors confirmed that there was no legal basis to proceed with the case, effectively clearing him of any charges.

“Now that I have been able to dispel the suspicions… I can retire with peace of mind,” he said in a statement.

His departure appears to mark a clean break following that resolution, allowing him to step away without ongoing legal uncertainty.

Leadership Transition Underway

CAF has moved quickly to ensure continuity, with Samson Adamu appointed as acting general secretary.

The transition comes at a critical time for African football, with major competitions, governance reforms, and commercial strategies all in focus.

CAF’s Broader Agenda Continues

Despite the leadership change, CAF’s operational roadmap remains intact.

Motsepe confirmed that the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations will proceed as planned in Morocco, albeit with revised dates. The tournament is now scheduled to take place from July 25 to August 16 after an earlier postponement.

The competition remains a key pillar in CAF’s efforts to expand women’s football and increase global visibility for the African game.

End of a Chapter, Start of Another

Mosengo-Omba’s resignation marks the end of a significant chapter in CAF’s recent history.

His tenure was defined by both scrutiny and structural progress — navigating institutional challenges while contributing to reforms aimed at strengthening African football governance.
