Addis Ababa — The first day of the Hospitality Hackathon 2026, hosted by Kuriftu Resorts & Spa in partnership with ALX Ethiopia, WeVenture, and media partner The Voice of Africa Group, opened to significantly higher-than-expected participation, with attendance exceeding venue capacity at the ALX Capstone Tech Hub in Lideta.
More than 440 participants — including developers, startup founders, students, and early-career professionals — attended Day 1, forming nearly 100 teams focused on building artificial intelligence solutions for the hospitality sector.

Organizers described the turnout as one of the strongest early indicators of demand for structured innovation platforms in Ethiopia’s growing technology ecosystem.
Industry-Led Opening Session Sets Strategic Direction
The program opened with a fireside discussion featuring Otto Kurzendorfer, General Manager of Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa, moderated by Mahlet Tadiwos-Salu.

Kurzendorfer emphasized the importance of long-term career development and adaptability within the hospitality industry, opening with a personal reflection:
“I started my career in the kitchen.”
The session focused on the evolving role of artificial intelligence in hospitality, particularly in operational efficiency, guest experience, and data-driven decision-making.
According to Mirafe Gebriel Marcos, the discussion provided practical value for participants:
“He didn’t just start a fireside chat; he gave a masterclass in what it means to pursue passion with humility and continuous learning.”
He also noted that the session moved beyond conceptual discussions of AI:
“The conversation dug into how AI can be applied in real hospitality environments — ensuring participants are building solutions that are both relevant and deployable.”
High Participation Drives Immediate Team Formation
Following the opening session, participants quickly transitioned into team formation and project development.

Organizers reported that 96 teams were formed within hours, reflecting both the scale of participation and the readiness of attendees to engage in practical solution-building.
The focus areas for participating teams include:
-
AI-driven guest experience platforms
-
Hospitality operations automation
-
Data analytics for service optimization
-
Digital booking and personalization systems
The pace of transition from discussion to execution was noted as a key strength of Day 1.
“The day was as much about building an ecosystem in real time as it was about the hackathon itself,” said Marcos.
Event Exceeds Capacity as Demand Surges

The ALX Capstone Tech Hub reached full capacity early in the day, with attendance exceeding initial projections.
Organizers accommodated additional participants where possible, highlighting strong interest in programs that combine technical training with real industry challenges.
The scale of participation reflects broader trends within Ethiopia’s technology sector, particularly the growing number of young professionals seeking opportunities in artificial intelligence and digital innovation.
Kuriftu Positions Hackathon as Industry Innovation Pipeline

For Kuriftu Resorts, the hackathon represents a strategic initiative to connect technology talent with real operational challenges in hospitality.
Yonaiel Belete, Operations Director at Kuriftu, emphasized the long-term vision behind the program:
“This is not just an event. It is a platform designed to connect talent with real industry needs. What we are seeing here is a strong indication that Ethiopia has the capacity to develop its own solutions for the hospitality sector.”
He added:
“The level of participation and the speed at which teams began working show that there is both capability and urgency. Our goal is to support this process beyond the hackathon and help translate ideas into viable products.”
From Hackathon to Venture Development

Unlike traditional hackathons, the program includes a post-event pathway.
Winning teams will enter a structured incubation program through WeVenture, receiving mentorship, workspace access, and support to refine their solutions for commercial deployment.
The final presentations are scheduled to take place at Kuriftu African Village later this month.
A Strong Start to a Multi-Stage Program

Day 1 of the Hospitality Hackathon 2026 demonstrated:
-
High demand for applied innovation platforms

Strong engagement between industry and technology talent
-
Immediate transition from learning to execution
