RABAT — Morocco will host the 2027 FIFA Congress, where Gianni Infantino is expected to secure a third and final term leading world football’s governing body.

The vote, scheduled for 18 March 2027, will bring together FIFA’s 211 member associations in what is widely anticipated to be an uncontested re-election for Infantino, who has led FIFA since 2016.

Africa’s Growing Influence in Global Football

The decision marks the second consecutive FIFA election hosted on African soil, following the 2023 Congress in Kigali, Rwanda. With 54 voting members, African federations continue to play a decisive role in FIFA leadership outcomes.

Support for Infantino has already been signaled by Confederation of African Football and its president Patrice Motsepe, reinforcing expectations of a smooth re-election process.

Morocco’s Strategic Rise in World Football

Hosting the Congress underscores Morocco’s growing influence within international football. The country is set to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal and has positioned itself as a key hub for global football governance.

Under the leadership of Fouzi Lekjaa, Morocco has expanded its role within FIFA structures, including hosting the organisation’s African regional office in Rabat.

The country’s national team also made history at the 2022 World Cup, becoming the first African side to reach the semi-finals—an achievement that elevated its global football profile.

Financial Strength and Political Backing

Infantino’s tenure has been marked by strong financial growth within FIFA, driven in part by expanding commercial revenues and the upcoming 2026 World Cup in North America.

FIFA’s financial model now allows significant funding distributions to member associations, strengthening political alliances across regions.

Infantino has also maintained high-level global visibility, engaging with political leaders including Donald Trump and Mohammed bin Salman, reflecting football’s increasing intersection with geopolitics.

Looking Ahead to 2031

If re-elected, Infantino’s presidency will extend to 2031, reaching FIFA’s term limit of 15 years in office.

The 2027 Congress is expected not only to confirm his leadership but also to serve as a strategic platform for Morocco to showcase its infrastructure, governance capabilities, and readiness ahead of the 2030 World Cup.
