United Nations Secretary General António Guterres has appointed Ghanaian humanitarian leader Edem Wosornu as Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), placing her in one of the most senior protection positions within the global refugee agency.
Wosornu succeeds Ruvendrini Menikdiwela of Sri Lanka, whose contributions to refugee protection were acknowledged by both the Secretary General and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
The appointment comes as forced displacement worldwide remains at historically high levels due to conflict, climate related disasters and humanitarian emergencies.
A Career Built on Humanitarian Response
Wosornu currently serves as Director of the Crisis Response Division at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
She also chairs the Inter Agency Standing Committee Emergency Directors Group, which coordinates international responses to major humanitarian crises.
According to the United Nations, she brings more than two decades of experience in humanitarian affairs, crisis management, emergency response and international coordination.

In addition to speaking English and Fante, she possesses a working knowledge of French, a valuable skill in many humanitarian operations, particularly across Africa and other multilingual regions.
