South Africa’s Paramount Group has strengthened its international defence ambitions after unveiling a new light armoured vehicle in partnership with India’s Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited during the Eurosatory 2026 defence exhibition in France.
The new vehicle, known as the Simha 4×4 Light Armoured Multi Purpose Vehicle, reflects growing collaboration between African and Asian defence manufacturers as they seek to supply military forces across emerging markets while challenging the traditional dominance of Western defence companies.
The launch also builds on an expanding relationship between the two companies, which have already collaborated on the production of armoured vehicles for the Indian Army.
A new platform designed for modern battlefields
The Simha 4×4 has been engineered to perform across a broad range of military operations including urban warfare, border security, reconnaissance, troop transport, internal security, command and control operations, force protection and special missions.
Designed with a modular architecture, the vehicle allows operators to easily upgrade and customise equipment according to mission requirements while simplifying long term maintenance and repair.
According to Paramount and Kalyani, the vehicle combines mobility, protection and operational flexibility while remaining affordable for countries looking to modernise their armed forces.
Its design is based on the proven Mbombe 4 platform and was developed through cooperation between Paramount Greece and Ukraine’s MAC HUB.
Defence partnership targets Africa and beyond
Although introduced in France, the Simha has been developed primarily with customers in Africa, India, South Asia and other emerging defence markets in mind.
Governments across many developing regions are increasing investments in military mobility, counter insurgency operations and force protection capabilities while seeking equipment that can be maintained locally and adapted for diverse environments.
For Paramount Group, the partnership represents another step in its strategy of expanding its international footprint through technology partnerships and local manufacturing arrangements.
Founded by South African entrepreneur Ivor Ichikowitz, the company has steadily grown into Africa’s largest privately owned defence and aerospace business, supplying armoured vehicles, aerospace technologies and defence systems to customers around the world.
India’s defence manufacturing continues to expand
Kalyani Strategic Systems serves as the flagship defence and aerospace subsidiary of Bharat Forge Limited, part of billionaire Baba Kalyani’s Kalyani Group.
The Indian conglomerate has become an increasingly important player in global defence manufacturing as India continues investing heavily in domestic military production and exports.
Amit Kalyani, Vice Chairman and Joint Managing Director of Bharat Forge, described the Simha as a globally competitive platform designed around NATO qualified components while remaining suitable for rapid industrial production in partner countries.
The vehicle’s name, Simha, comes from the Sanskrit word for lion, reflecting strength, agility and resilience.
Building on years of successful collaboration
The latest vehicle follows an existing partnership between Paramount and Kalyani that began several years ago.
In 2021, Bharat Forge secured an initial $24 million contract from India’s Ministry of Defence after Paramount’s Mbombe 4 platform successfully completed demanding military vehicle trials.
Under that agreement, Kalyani Strategic Systems manufactures the vehicle locally as the Kalyani M4 for the Indian Army at its production facility in Pune.
The first vehicles entered Indian military service in April 2022 and have since been deployed during United Nations peacekeeping operations.
The Mbombe platform itself was specifically designed to operate in dangerous environments exposed to landmines and improvised explosive devices while maintaining high mobility across difficult terrain.
Paramount’s growing international footprint
Beyond India, Paramount has steadily expanded exports of the Mbombe family of protected combat vehicles.
Countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Togo, the United Arab Emirates and India have all ordered variants of the platform since its introduction.
The company has also entered Europe through licensing agreements, including a partnership with Czech defence company STV Group, which markets the Mbombe 4 under the M4 Golem name.
More recently, Paramount achieved another milestone after Ukraine officially approved the MAC OWL armoured vehicle for military service.
The MAC OWL is a Ukrainian adapted version of the Mbombe 4 Infantry Combat Vehicle developed alongside MAC HUB for high threat operational environments.
The approval further strengthens Paramount’s presence in Europe’s rapidly evolving defence market while demonstrating the growing international demand for its combat vehicle technology.
Africa’s defence industry gains greater global visibility
The collaboration between Paramount Group and Kalyani Strategic Systems highlights an important shift in the global defence industry as manufacturers from Africa and Asia increasingly develop advanced military technologies capable of competing on the international stage.
As defence production becomes more diversified, partnerships such as this demonstrate how companies from emerging economies are contributing to innovation, industrial development and global security markets.
For Africa, the growth of companies like Paramount reflects the continent’s expanding engineering capabilities and its ability to participate more actively in sophisticated manufacturing sectors. While Africa’s industrial journey is still evolving, collaborations that combine innovation, local expertise and international partnerships continue to position the continent for a stronger role in the global economy. Africa’s defence industry, like many of its strategic sectors, is still growing and its story is only beginning.
