Ivory Coast has written a new chapter in its football history after defeating Curaçao 2-0 to qualify for the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time.
The victory in Philadelphia secured Les Éléphants a place in the Round of 16 during their fourth appearance at football’s biggest tournament, sparking celebrations among players and supporters after years of falling short on the global stage.
The historic achievement was inspired by forward Nicolas Pépé, whose two goals ensured Ivory Coast progressed from Group E and kept alive hopes of an even deeper World Cup run.
Nicolas Pépé Delivers on the Biggest Stage
Pépé wasted little time putting Ivory Coast in control, opening the scoring in the seventh minute and settling any early nerves.
Although Ivory Coast only needed a draw to advance, the African champions approached the match with confidence and attacking intent, limiting Curaçao’s chances throughout the contest.
The Villarreal forward put the result beyond doubt in the 64th minute with a composed left footed finish before being substituted three minutes later to preserve his fitness ahead of the knockout stage.
Speaking after the match, Pépé said the team has no intention of lowering its ambitions.
“We aren’t setting any limits for ourselves. I think we have huge potential.”
A Historic Milestone for Les Éléphants
The final whistle triggered emotional scenes as players dropped to their knees before gathering for a team photograph while pointing one finger toward the sky, symbolising the nation’s first ever qualification for the knockout rounds.
Inside the dressing room, the celebrations continued as players danced, sang and celebrated a victory that many generations of Ivorian footballers had pursued but never achieved.
Ivory Coast began its tournament with a 1-0 victory over Ecuador before suffering defeat against Germany. The win over Curaçao proved enough to secure progression from Group E.
Philadelphia Becomes a Home Away From Home
Ivory Coast enjoyed strong backing throughout the match from thousands of supporters inside the stadium.
The team had based its preparations in nearby Delaware and trained at the facilities of Major League Soccer club Philadelphia Union during the tournament. A friendly match against the club’s second team also helped strengthen local support before the World Cup.
More than 68,000 spectators attended Thursday’s match, with a large number of fans wearing Ivory Coast’s famous orange colours creating an atmosphere that closely resembled a home fixture.
Head coach Emerse Faé admitted it would be difficult to leave Philadelphia after the support his players received.
“It’s a little difficult to have to leave Philadelphia,” he said.
Eyes Now Turn to the Round of 16
Ivory Coast will face either France or Norway on June 30, depending on which nation finishes second in Group I.
Rather than worrying about the opponent, Pépé insisted the team’s focus remains on progressing even further.
“If we aim to go all the way, it doesn’t matter who we play,” he said.
The confidence reflects a squad that has grown steadily throughout the tournament and now finds itself among the final sixteen teams competing for football’s biggest prize.
African Football Continues to Reach New Heights
Ivory Coast’s breakthrough is another significant moment for African football on the world stage. Advancing beyond the group stage has long been a benchmark for many nations across the continent, but Les Éléphants have now broken new ground by reaching the knockout rounds for the first time in their history.
Their achievement also highlights the continued growth of African football, with improved player development, stronger domestic structures and greater international experience helping national teams compete with the world’s best. As a new generation of talent continues to emerge, Ivory Coast’s historic qualification serves as another reminder that Africa’s football story is still being written, with even greater milestones waiting on the horizon.
