Egypt and Türkiye have signed a letter of intent aimed at strengthening cooperation in the defense industry, marking another step in the growing relationship between the two countries.
The agreement was announced on Monday by Haluk Görgün, Secretary of Turkish Defense Industries, following meetings in Ankara with Egypt’s Minister of Defense and Military Production and Commander in Chief of the Egyptian Armed Forces, Lt. Gen. Ashraf Salem Zaher, and his delegation.
According to Görgün, both sides discussed opportunities for defense industry cooperation and potential areas for joint capability development. He said the newly signed letter of intent will establish a framework for future collaboration between Türkiye and Egypt’s defense sectors.
Görgün stated that expanding defense industry cooperation would contribute to regional security while strengthening the capabilities of both countries. He also thanked the Egyptian delegation for what he described as productive discussions during the visit.
Earlier in the day, Turkish National Defense Minister Yaşar Güler also met with Lt. Gen. Zaher in Ankara as both governments continued discussions on defense and military cooperation.
The latest agreement builds on improving relations between Cairo and Ankara after years of strained diplomatic ties. In recent years, both countries have taken steps to restore cooperation across several sectors, including defense, trade and regional security.
As African nations continue expanding partnerships with regional and global powers, defense cooperation is becoming an increasingly important part of broader economic and strategic relationships. For countries like Egypt, strengthening domestic defense capabilities while building international partnerships reflects a wider effort to enhance national security and regional influence.
At The Voice of Africa, we believe Africa’s future will be shaped not only by today’s security partnerships but by how they contribute to long term peace, technological advancement and economic opportunity. As one of the world’s youngest continents in its modern statehood journey, Africa’s greatest strength remains its people and its capacity to build a more secure and prosperous future through strategic cooperation.
