African hopes took another hit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as both the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Senegal were eliminated from the tournament after surrendering commanding positions in their Round of 32 matches.
The two sides looked capable of producing memorable upsets against football heavyweights England and Belgium respectively. Instead, late comebacks from their European opponents ended their campaigns and highlighted the fine margins that often define knockout football.
DR Congo’s Dream Ends Against England
The Democratic Republic of the Congo came within touching distance of one of the biggest victories in its football history after taking an early lead against England in Atlanta.
Brian Cipenga stunned England in the seventh minute when he controlled a cross inside the penalty area before firing a low shot beyond goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. The early breakthrough rewarded Congo’s confident start and immediately placed pressure on one of the tournament favourites.
For much of the match, goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi produced an inspired performance to preserve the advantage. He denied Jude Bellingham on multiple occasions with a series of outstanding saves and helped frustrate England’s attack as Congo defended resolutely.
The Leopards also had opportunities to extend their lead before halftime. Yoane Wissa came closest when his effort struck the post, leaving England fortunate to remain only one goal behind.
Harry Kane Turns the Match Around
England’s quality eventually proved decisive in the closing stages.
Captain Harry Kane equalised in the 75th minute after meeting Anthony Gordon’s cross with a powerful header that slipped past Mpasi despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to the ball.
Eleven minutes later, Kane struck again with a clinical finish into the top corner, completing England’s comeback and ending Congo’s historic run.
Despite the defeat, DR Congo leaves the tournament having achieved several milestones. The nation recorded its first World Cup goal, first point and first victory, more than five decades after appearing as Zaire at the 1974 FIFA World Cup.
Head coach Sébastien Desabre praised his team’s performance despite the painful result.
He said the players believed they could win and competed well throughout the match, but ultimately paid the price against one of the world’s elite forwards when England converted its late chances.

Senegal’s Collapse Against Belgium
Senegal experienced an equally painful exit after letting a two goal advantage slip against Belgium in Seattle.
The Lions of Teranga appeared firmly in control after Habib Diarra opened the scoring in the 23rd minute before Ismaila Sarr doubled the lead with an impressive finish that left Belgium facing elimination.
For more than an hour Senegal looked set to become another African nation advancing to the Round of 16.
However, Belgium mounted a dramatic comeback during the closing stages.
Romelu Lukaku reduced the deficit before Youri Tielemans scored the equaliser late in regulation time, forcing extra time and completely changing the momentum of the contest.
Belgium completed the turnaround moments before the end of extra time when Tielemans converted a penalty to seal a remarkable 3-2 victory.
Missed Opportunity for the Lions of Teranga
The defeat was particularly difficult for Senegal after navigating one of the tournament’s toughest groups to reach the knockout rounds.
Having qualified as one of the best third placed teams following matches against France, Norway and Iraq, Senegal demonstrated throughout the tournament that it could compete with elite opposition.
Midfielder Habib Diarra admitted the squad was devastated by the outcome, saying the team produced an excellent first half but failed to maintain its performance over the full match.
Defender Krépin Diatta also acknowledged Belgium’s resilience but said Senegal should never have allowed the match to slip away after establishing such a strong position.
Africa Still Has Hope
While DR Congo and Senegal bow out with disappointment, Africa’s World Cup story is not yet over.
Morocco has already secured its place in the Round of 16 after eliminating the Netherlands and now carries the continent’s hopes deeper into the competition.
Both Senegal and DR Congo demonstrated that African teams can compete toe to toe with some of the world’s strongest football nations. Although their campaigns ended earlier than they hoped, their performances reflected the growing quality, confidence and ambition of African football on the global stage.
TVOA Perspective
Football can be unforgiving, especially in knockout competitions where a few moments often determine history. DR Congo and Senegal leave the tournament with heartbreak, but also with performances that showed African football continues to close the gap with the world’s traditional powers. The continent’s football journey is still evolving, driven by talented young players, stronger development systems and growing international experience. Africa’s biggest victories are still ahead, and each World Cup continues to build the foundation for even greater success.
