Shares in Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals officially went on sale on Monday as Africa’s largest oil refinery launched what is expected to become the continent’s biggest initial public offering (IPO).
The offering marks a significant milestone not only for the company but also for African capital markets, with billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote positioning the share sale as an opportunity for ordinary Africans—not just institutional investors—to own a stake in one of the continent’s most strategic industrial assets.
The company is seeking to raise approximately $1.6 billion, with ambitions of attracting as many as 10 million shareholders from across Africa.
Opening Ownership to Everyday Africans
Dangote said the IPO reflects his vision of creating wealth that extends beyond a single company or family.
Rather than limiting ownership to a small group of investors, the refinery’s founder says he wants millions of Africans to participate in the business’s long-term growth.
Investors are able to purchase as few as 10 shares, priced at approximately $0.38 each, significantly lowering the entry barrier for retail investors.
Dangote has also expressed confidence in the company’s long-term prospects, saying he expects the value of the shares to appreciate substantially over time, although he did not specify when that could occur.
A Refinery Built to Transform Africa’s Energy Landscape
Located outside Lagos, the Dangote Refinery began operations in 2024 after years of construction and investment.
The facility is regarded as Africa’s largest oil refinery and among the world’s biggest single-train refining complexes.
Its commissioning represented a major step toward reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products while increasing local production capacity.
The refinery has since become one of the flagship assets within the Dangote Group’s diversified industrial portfolio.
IPO Funds to Drive Expansion
A portion of the proceeds from the public offering will finance the refinery’s next phase of expansion.
The company plans to increase processing capacity over the coming years, with the goal of becoming the world’s largest refinery of its kind by 2028.
Expanding production is expected to strengthen fuel supplies across Nigeria and other African markets while boosting exports to international customers.
The investment also aligns with broader efforts to position Nigeria as a major downstream energy hub.
A Milestone for African Capital Markets
If fully subscribed, the listing would become the largest IPO ever completed on the African continent.
The transaction highlights growing investor interest in large-scale African infrastructure and industrial projects, particularly those capable of generating long-term economic value.
Analysts say the offering could also encourage broader retail participation in African stock markets by allowing smaller investors access to one of the continent’s most prominent private enterprises.
Looking Ahead
As subscription for the IPO begins, investors will closely monitor demand for the shares and the company’s execution of its ambitious expansion strategy.
For Dangote, the listing represents more than a fundraising exercise. It is also an attempt to democratize ownership of one of Africa’s most significant industrial investments while reinforcing Nigeria’s position in the global energy sector.
