The neighbouring West African nations pledge closer cooperation on intelligence sharing, cross-border security and illegal gold mining
Guinea and Ivory Coast have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation across security, trade and political affairs following high-level talks between Presidents Mamady Doumbouya and Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan.
The meeting reflects growing efforts by West African nations to work more closely as the region faces persistent security threats, cross-border crime and economic challenges.
President Doumbouya arrived in the Ivorian commercial capital on Friday before holding formal discussions with Ouattara on Sunday, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation between their neighbouring countries.
Security Takes Centre Stage
Regional security dominated the discussions, with Doumbouya stressing that sustainable economic development depends on lasting peace and stability.
He called for stronger intelligence sharing and coordinated action against terrorism, organised crime and other cross-border threats that continue to affect parts of West Africa.
According to Doumbouya, Guinea is prepared to deepen cooperation with Ivory Coast through greater exchanges of intelligence and joint efforts aimed at improving regional security.
The discussions come as several West African countries continue to strengthen collaboration to address evolving security risks across the region.
Focus on Illegal Gold Mining
Another major issue raised during the meeting was illegal gold mining, which both countries consider an increasingly important economic and security concern.
According to a statement from Ouattara’s office, Doumbouya described the fight against illicit mining as a strategic priority.
Illegal gold production continues to deprive many African countries of valuable tax revenue while fuelling smuggling networks and illicit financial flows.
A 2024 report estimated that as much as 40% of Africa’s gold production goes undeclared, costing governments billions of dollars in lost revenue each year.
The two leaders indicated that stronger cross-border cooperation would help combat illegal mining activities while improving oversight of the sector.
Expanding Economic Cooperation
Beyond security, the meeting also focused on strengthening trade and broader political relations between Guinea and Ivory Coast.
Both countries play important roles in the West African economy, with growing opportunities to expand cross-border commerce, infrastructure development and regional investment.
Closer cooperation could support economic growth while improving the movement of goods and strengthening regional integration.
Regional Cooperation Gains Importance
The renewed partnership comes at a time when West Africa continues to adapt to shifting political and security dynamics.
Countries across the region have increasingly sought bilateral and regional partnerships to tackle shared challenges ranging from terrorism and organised crime to illegal resource extraction and trade barriers.
For Guinea and Ivory Coast, enhanced cooperation represents an effort to protect national interests while contributing to greater regional stability.
Looking Ahead
The commitments announced in Abidjan are expected to strengthen diplomatic relations between the two neighbours and provide a framework for closer collaboration on security, economic development and governance.
As regional challenges evolve, both governments appear committed to working together to improve stability while unlocking new opportunities for trade and development across West Africa.
