The Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC), hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO), has launched a new website designed to strengthen the global response to cholera and support efforts to eliminate the disease by 2030. The platform offers a centralised source of up-to-date information, tools, and technical guidance for governments, health professionals, development partners and the general public.

Bringing together more than 50 organisations, including UN agencies, academic institutions and nongovernmental bodies, the GTFCC aims to improve coordination and transparency in the fight against cholera. According to Dr Philippe Barboza, WHO team lead for cholera,

“This website represents a significant step forward in raising global awareness and visibility of cholera and provides countries and partners with essential tools to enhance coordination and joint action. It reflects our strong commitment to transparency, partnership, and evidence-driven efforts in the fight to end cholera.”

Real-time intelligence to guide decisions

The new platform offers interactive dashboards and maps displaying real-time data on cholera outbreaks, oral cholera vaccine (OCV) campaigns, and National Cholera Plans (NCPs). It also highlights Priority Areas for Multisectoral Interventions (PAMIs) and Country Support Platforms (CSPs). This visual and timely data is designed to inform rapid response and policy development.

A vital tool for Africa’s cholera response

For African countries, where cholera continues to pose a serious public health challenge, the new GTFCC website is especially significant. The continent accounts for a large share of global cholera cases, with recurring outbreaks linked to poor sanitation, limited access to clean water, fragile health systems and climate-related disasters. The platform will help African governments track outbreaks in real time, prioritise interventions, and coordinate more effectively with partners on the ground.

By providing technical documents and training tailored to African contexts, the site also strengthens the capacity of frontline workers and ministries of health to implement proven solutions. Countries can use the guidance to build or refine their National Cholera Plans, ensuring that responses are locally driven, sustainable and aligned with the GTFCC’s 2030 Roadmap.

Technical support for frontline action

With over 80 technical documents and training materials, the site equips users with vital resources on cholera case management, surveillance, laboratory support, oral cholera vaccination, water sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and related research. These tools aim to improve the quality and consistency of cholera interventions, especially in high-risk areas.

Tailored guidance to support national plans

The website provides country-specific guidance for developing and refining NCPs and identifying PAMIs, aligning with the GTFCC’s 2030 Roadmap. These resources are intended to accelerate progress and ensure that interventions are well coordinated, evidence-based, and locally led.

The new GTFCC platform marks a timely investment in global health infrastructure as climate change, conflict, and displacement continue to drive the resurgence of cholera in many parts of the world. For Africa, it is a step forward in turning data into action, and strategy into impact.
