Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, who recently assumed the rotating leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has renewed calls for Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to reconsider their withdrawal from the bloc. Speaking during his ongoing tour of West African countries, Bio emphasized that the region’s stability and prosperity depend on unity and cooperation.

Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, all under military rule, announced in January their formal departure from ECOWAS. The decision came after the bloc demanded a swift return to democratic governance in Niger following its July 2023 coup. In response, the three countries consolidated their ties under a new coalition, the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), signaling a major rupture in West African regional politics.

President Bio, however, expressed confidence that his personal relationships with the Sahelian leaders could help bridge the divide. He stressed that ECOWAS, as a 15-member body, must remain united in addressing the pressing challenges confronting the region.

Bio takes on the ECOWAS chairmanship at a time of significant instability in West Africa. The region continues to face a convergence of threats including violent extremism, recurrent military takeovers, climate-related pressures, and widespread poverty. He warned that these challenges cannot be effectively tackled if the bloc remains fragmented.

Laying out his vision for his tenure, President Bio pledged to focus on:

• Defending democratic governance and encouraging the restoration of civilian rule where it has been disrupted.

• Strengthening security cooperation to combat terrorism and cross-border insurgencies.

• Deepening economic integration to boost trade, investment, and shared growth among member states.

• Restoring institutional credibility, ensuring ECOWAS remains a trusted and respected actor in regional and global affairs.

While the rift with the Sahel states presents one of the most formidable tests in ECOWAS’ history, Bio’s diplomatic outreach highlights his determination to keep dialogue open. Analysts suggest that his approach may determine whether the bloc can heal divisions or whether the split will become permanent.

For now, President Bio insists that West Africa’s strength lies in its unity and that the door remains open for Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to “return to the fold” and work together in facing shared challenges.
