Mama Doing Good Foundation Drives Grassroots Transformation Through Women and Children in Kenya

In Kenya’s development landscape, few grassroots movements have scaled with both precision and purpose like the Mama Doing Good Foundation, an organisation rooted in community mobilisation and long-term socio-economic transformation.

Established from an idea conceived in 1997 and formally actualised in 2009, the Foundation draws its operational strength from the flagship Joyful Women Organisation (JOYWO), spearheaded by Rachel Ruto. What began as a modest network of 60 women has evolved into a nationwide movement of over 250,000 women organised into more than 17,000 groups, collectively revolving over USD 30 million within Kenya’s informal and microfinance economy.

At its core, Mama Doing Good functions as a catalytic platform, designed to stimulate inclusivity and accelerate socio-economic mobility for women, children, and vulnerable populations. Its programming is structured across three pillars: JOYWO, Voice of Children, and Tuombeni Kenya, each addressing distinct but interconnected dimensions of community development.

The Foundation’s economic model is anchored in grassroots financial inclusion, particularly through the widely recognised table banking system pioneered under JOYWO. This model has enabled thousands of rural women to access credit, build savings, and invest in livelihoods, positioning women not merely as beneficiaries but as economic actors shaping local economies.

Beyond financial empowerment, the organisation’s child-centred interventions reflect a deliberate policy alignment with Kenya’s broader development priorities. Through the Voice of Children initiative, the Foundation advances a rights-based framework built on provision, protection, and participation. This ensures that children are not only recipients of services such as education, nutrition, and healthcare, but are also actively included in decision-making processes that affect their futures.

Mrs Ruto’s advocacy extends into global policy spaces, where she plays a strategic role within the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development. Her work intersects with continental agendas on women’s leadership, financial inclusion, and health systems strengthening, reinforcing the link between grassroots action and high-level policy influence.

Her leadership has also been visible in global coalitions addressing systemic challenges affecting children and families. As a champion of the School Meals Coalition and clean cooking initiatives, she continues to push for integrated solutions that address public health, environmental sustainability, and economic resilience. These interventions recognise that access to clean energy and nutrition is not peripheral but central to development outcomes.

Her contributions have been formally recognised through several honours, including the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH), one of Kenya’s highest civilian distinctions, alongside international recognition for her work in women’s empowerment and humanitarian impact.

Born on 20 November 1969, Mrs Ruto’s academic foundation includes a Bachelor of Education from Kenyatta University and a Master of Arts in Development Studies from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. Her professional trajectory reflects a blend of academic grounding and practical engagement, bridging policy, advocacy, and community-level implementation.

It is a model that embeds agency at the grassroots while maintaining alignment with national and continental frameworks.
