South Sudan has launched its first national air traffic management system, marking a significant step toward full control of its airspace as the country continues efforts to rebuild critical infrastructure after years of conflict.

The system, built in cooperation with China, was inaugurated on Monday and is being described by officials as a milestone for the young nation. Previously, South Sudan relied on a 2016 agreement with neighboring Sudan to manage its airspace.

President Salva Kiir announced the development, stating that the country now has a “fully operational independent airspace management system.” The project also included the training of more than 80 South Sudanese technicians, aimed at ensuring local capacity to manage and sustain operations.

“We have finally reclaimed full control over our airspace,” Kiir said during the inauguration ceremony, where he also thanked China for its role in delivering the system. He added that the government would work to ensure uninterrupted functionality, emphasizing that “we cannot afford to fail.”

South Sudan gained independence in 2011, but the country has faced persistent challenges, including conflict, weak infrastructure, and economic instability. Its aviation sector has been particularly vulnerable, with frequent safety concerns and limited technical capacity.

Earlier this year, a small aircraft crash shortly after takeoff from Juba claimed 14 lives, underscoring the urgent need for improved air safety systems.

Minister of Transport Rizik Zakaria described the initiative as a cooperative effort between South Sudan and the Chinese government. The new system is expected to enhance flight coordination, improve safety, and reduce reliance on external partners.

Despite the progress, South Sudan continues to grapple with poverty, humanitarian pressures, and renewed violence in some regions. However, officials see infrastructure projects like this as essential to long-term stability and economic development.

As South Sudan builds its institutions, control over its airspace represents more than a technical achievement. It signals a broader ambition to strengthen sovereignty and modernize key sectors of the economy.

From a wider African perspective, developments like this highlight the steady, often complex progress taking place across the continent. South Sudan, like many nations, is still early in its development journey. While challenges remain significant, investments in infrastructure, skills, and partnerships show that systems can improve over time. Africa’s future continues to be shaped by these incremental but meaningful steps forward.
