South Africa is experiencing a sharp winter cold snap, with heavy snow, freezing temperatures, strong winds and rough seas affecting several parts of the country.

Snow has been reported across high-lying areas of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Free State, while mountain peaks in the Western Cape have also been covered in snow.

The wintry conditions have produced striking scenes across parts of the country, with snow-covered landscapes contrasting with the milder conditions typically associated with South African winters.

The South African Weather Service has warned that the cold system is bringing wet, very cold and windy conditions to several regions.

Cold conditions spread across South Africa

The southern Free State, Northern Cape, Gauteng and Mpumalanga are among the areas experiencing the cold spell, while parts of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal are also facing unusually cold and wet weather.

Strong winds and persistent rain are adding to the difficult conditions, particularly in areas already affected by low temperatures.

Further snowfall remains possible, especially across mountainous and elevated areas as the cold system continues to move through the country.

Gauteng faces rain and possible snow

Gauteng is experiencing cloudy conditions ranging from cold to very cold, accompanied by scattered showers and rain.

The South African Weather Service has warned that snow is also possible over the province’s western high ground.

The combination of freezing temperatures, rain and strong winds could create difficult conditions for motorists and people undertaking outdoor activities.

Poor visibility in areas affected by snow and heavy rain could also make travel more challenging.

Rough seas add to weather concerns

The cold snap is also affecting South Africa’s coastline, with rough seas reported along parts of the coast.

The combination of strong winds, cold temperatures and unsettled marine conditions has prompted calls for residents, motorists and farmers to take precautions.

Farmers in affected areas have also been urged to prepare for the cold and wet conditions, particularly where temperatures could affect livestock and agricultural activity.

More snowfall possible

Forecasters expect the cold conditions to continue across parts of South Africa, with additional snowfall possible in elevated areas.

While snowfall is not unusual in some of the country’s higher-altitude regions during winter, widespread snow can disrupt transport and create hazardous conditions when combined with freezing temperatures, strong winds and poor visibility.

Residents in affected areas are being advised to monitor weather updates and take appropriate precautions as the cold system moves across the country.
