Botswana is expanding its use of peaceful nuclear science as part of a broader strategy to strengthen healthcare, agriculture, food security and long-term energy planning.
The government says nuclear applications will increasingly be aligned with the country’s Vision 2036 development agenda, placing science and technology at the centre of efforts to improve public health, rural livelihoods and national resilience.
Communications and Innovation Minister David Tshere outlined the strategy during a welcome ceremony for delegates from the International Atomic Energy Agency in Gaborone.
The areas identified for cooperation include nuclear safety and security governance, cancer care, food security, livestock productivity, human capital development and strategic energy planning.
Botswana has been a member of the IAEA since 2002 and signed its fourth Country Programme Framework with the agency in 2022.That framework provides the foundation for technical cooperation between Botswana and the IAEA from 2023 to 2028. The government’s approach reflects the wider range of peaceful applications available through nuclear science.
In healthcare, nuclear technologies can support diagnosis and treatment, particularly in cancer care.
In agriculture, related scientific applications can assist with food safety, livestock health and productivity.
For Botswana, the significance lies in connecting those technologies directly to development priorities rather than treating nuclear science exclusively as an energy issue.
Tshere said the government wants scientific cooperation to produce measurable improvements in public health, agriculture and resilience.
That approach is particularly important for African countries seeking to build stronger domestic scientific capacity while reducing dependence on imported technical expertise.
Botswana’s strategy also places nuclear governance alongside technological development.
Any expansion in nuclear applications requires strong systems for safety, regulation, training and security. The inclusion of those areas in Botswana’s cooperation with the IAEA suggests the government is attempting to develop institutional capacity alongside practical applications.
The programme also fits within a wider debate about how African states can use science more aggressively to address development challenges.
Healthcare shortages, agricultural vulnerability, food insecurity and energy planning are not problems that can be solved by a single technology.
But access to advanced scientific tools can expand the range of solutions available to governments.
For Botswana, the challenge will be turning technical cooperation into sustained domestic capacity, trained specialists and programmes that produce visible results for ordinary people.
That is where the broader African significance lies. Much of the continent’s development debate still focuses on what Africa lacks. Botswana’s approach points towards a different question: how can African states make better use of scientific tools already available to them? The continent’s institutions remain relatively young, but that also means many are still being shaped. Building strong scientific institutions now can influence development for generations. Botswana’s decision to place peaceful nuclear science within health, agriculture and national planning is therefore not simply a technology story. It is a reminder that Africa’s future will depend increasingly on its ability to understand, regulate and use advanced science for its own priorities.
