The Mohamed bin Zayed Foundation for Humanity and the Gates Foundation will host the first ever Middle East and North Africa edition of the Goalkeepers event on 8 December 2025 in Abu Dhabi. The gathering will bring global leaders, innovators and changemakers together to accelerate progress toward the United Nations Global Goals.
Goalkeepers has become one of the world’s most influential convenings on development since its launch in 2017. It highlights work across all seventeen Sustainable Development Goals including poverty reduction, health access, hunger, education and equity. Previous speakers include world leaders, Nobel laureates and global cultural figures. It is recognised as a space where partnerships are formed and where young leaders gain visibility to scale their impact.
This year’s Abu Dhabi edition comes at a decisive moment. The United Arab Emirates continues to invest in global development, especially maternal and child health and the fight against infectious disease. Dr Shamma Khalifa Al Mazrouei said the event represents a chance to show how human potential can be unlocked at scale. Bill Gates added that the partnership with Abu Dhabi reflects shared commitments to saving lives and accelerating solutions for urgent challenges.
For Africa, this event holds unique significance. The continent has the world’s youngest population and some of the fastest moving development ecosystems. Africa has contributed groundbreaking work in local health innovation, youth-led social entrepreneurship and climate resilience. Yet African youth voices remain underrepresented in global decision spaces that directly shape their futures.
Platforms like The Voice of Africa show how that gap can be bridged. African ecosystems are no longer waiting to be included. They are building platforms that amplify African leadership across media, trade, development, technology and youth empowerment. Africa’s changemakers are pushing their work onto the world stage through storytelling, solutions, and ground-up impact that matches the urgency of the Global Goals.
Goalkeepers Abu Dhabi is an opportunity to connect this rising African energy with partners who are ready to scale solutions. It is also a space where African youth leadership and Gulf leadership can meet at the intersection of philanthropy, innovation and global development. The UAE has already partnered with African countries through initiatives like the Beginnings Fund for maternal and newborn survival. This event can expand that bridge.
As the world approaches 2030, the conversation is shifting from intention to action. Africa must be in the rooms where global priorities are being shaped. African stories, innovators and young leaders need representation at global summits because they carry the lived reality of development challenges and the creativity to solve them.
Goalkeepers Abu Dhabi presents a moment to recognise that the next wave of global progress will not happen without Africa and will be stronger with African youth at the table.
